More about this organization
Hold a colorful, holographic museum card or pass against a light background.

As the largest component of the cultural sector, Dutch museums are uniquely positioned to connect with society and bring together a wide variety of perspectives and people. Each museum tells a unique story, sparks conversations, and fosters cultural development. They showcase the past, tell our stories, and work toward a shared future. Because museums belong to and are for everyone.

As Head of Operations, you will be responsible for the financial, digital, and facilities management processes of both the Museum Association and the Museum Card Foundation. As a member of the Management Team, you will play a key role in ensuring the organization’s stability and performance, including by coordinating, implementing, and monitoring the planning and control cycle.

The Museum Card is an important tool for museums. With over 1.3 million cardholders, it makes a significant contribution to museums’ revenue and the public interest. The Head of Operations plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuity and development of the Museum Card.

What will you be doing?

  • Together with the management team, you will help shape the Museum Association’s new direction. In this role, you will serve as the director’s right-hand person for business matters;
  • You will lead a dedicated team of approximately 5 professionals, ensuring that your team receives the support it needs to achieve organizational goals and that your team remains enthusiastic and functions effectively;
  • You are responsible for developing and implementing financial policies, including financial administration, the budget, and the annual financial statements;
  • You will maintain various internal and external contacts with our members, our accountant, the tax authorities, banking institutions, and other service providers.
  • You translate relevant information into management insights. You develop, model, and analyze reports, key metrics, and performance indicators;
  • You will attend member meetings and board meetings as appropriate, and provide independent advice to the board’s finance committee;
  • You will play a key leadership role in the major IT projects supporting the Museum Card, such as the transition to Salesforce and the development of a Museum Card app. Together with the team, you will manage the external partners working on the Museum Card (including customer service).
  • You and your team are responsible for your own office space and facilities management.
  • You are responsible for maintaining transparent and up-to-date IT and GDPR policies, and you help raise awareness of GDPR-compliant practices among all stakeholders.

Who are you?

Please bring the following:

  • You have proven experience in business controlling and financial audits, and have extensive experience in evaluating and managing financial accounting;
  • You have leadership experience and find it inspiring to help others grow;
  • You have experience managing complex projects, preferably in the field of IT;
  • You are decisive and, thanks to your strong interpersonal skills, are able to provide clear and persuasive advice to stakeholders.

What do we offer?

  • Autonomy and influence at the heart of the museum world, and the opportunity to make a difference in a sector of great social significance;
  • An employment contract (initially a one-year contract) for 32 or 36 hours (full-time);
  • Hybrid work (at least 2 days in the office) in a vibrant setting: starting January 1, 2023, at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam;
  • Position under the Museum Collective Bargaining Agreement, pay scale 13 (approx. €5,000–6,400 gross per month based on a 36-hour workweek);
  • A travel expense and work-from-home policy, and of course a Museum Card for yourself and to give away.

Are you interested?

After a review of their applications, candidates will be invited to an initial interview. The Museum Association is an inclusive organization and strives to ensure that its team composition reflects society at large. We believe that by bringing together diverse individuals, we gain greater insights and can, as the Museum Association, further enhance the social value of our work in innovative, creative, and meaningful ways. Does this approach resonate with you? If so, we look forward to receiving your application!
