What does Doctors of the World do?

Doctors of the World is the Dutch branch of the international medical organization Médecins du Monde, which advocates both domestically and abroad for the universal right to health—including the right to and access to healthcare—for people who are excluded from these services. Our organization is staffed by a team of 280 volunteers and 55 paid staff members.

The International Program

Doctors of the World collaborates with partner organizations around the world. Our international program focuses on strengthening local health systems and expanding access to care for vulnerable populations. For example, we are currently working with partners in Ukraine and Turkey on sustainable (emergency) programs related to sexual and reproductive health and mental health care. In Tanzania, we are working on safe surgery and anesthesia through a Train-the-Trainer approach, and in Morocco and Tunisia, we are committed to advocacy on migration and access to healthcare. The further development and sustainability of programs are always central to our efforts.

Profile

In this role, you will be responsible for managing the implementation of the International Program and ensuring the quality and content of the program. You will lead a team of three staff members. In addition, you will play a leading role in the program’s further development, grant applications, and exploring partnership opportunities to secure sustainable funding. You will report to the Executive Director.
This position also involves the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and monitor existing programs to ensure the quality of implementation and compliance with agreements with donors, in collaboration with MDM departments and local partners.
  • Oversee the implementation of current projects/contracts.
  • Responsible for the international program budget; oversees and ensures clear budget forecasts based on the implementation plan.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing the HR staffing plan and working closely with HR colleagues.
  • Comprehensive management of international program staff with regard to absenteeism, performance management, safety, and development, as well as the revision of policies and procedures.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with donors, foundations, MDM departments, and partner organizations both domestically and internationally.
  • A leading role in securing grants and developing proposals in collaboration with internal teams and (external) partners.
  • Monitors future funding opportunities and relationships with (potential) donors.
  • Prepares substantive donor reports in collaboration with the PMEL advisor and the Financial Controller.
  • Ensure that program quality and the PME framework are incorporated into new project and funding proposals.

What do you bring to the table?

  • College or university level of work and thinking.
  • At least 5 years of work experience; demonstrable (program) management skills, such as successfully leading staff, project management, planning and budgeting, and delivering results on time.
  • Experience or a strong interest in relationship management, fundraising, and/or communications within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English, both spoken and written; knowledge of French is a plus.
  • You are willing to travel to our international partners and programs a few times a year.

We offer

  • A position on a growing team within a dynamic and international organization that plays an active role in society. A hybrid work arrangement is definitely possible.
  • We encourage and greatly value initiative that aligns with our goals and work methods.
  • A 12-month temporary employment contract with the possibility of extension.
  • A gross monthly salary ranging from a minimum of €3,707.56 to a maximum of €5,486.41 for full-time employment (40 hours per week). Salary is determined based on the (internal) benchmark as well as knowledge and experience.
  • A non-contributory pension.
  • 30 days of vacation per year for full-time employees.
  • And just as important: a pleasant workplace, centrally located in Amsterdam and easily accessible by public transportation.
