Mediamatic is an art center in Amsterdam that curates and conducts research at the intersection of art, biology, food, and sustainability. By organizing lectures,experimental dinners,exhibitions, andworkshops, we bring the latest developments in society to a wider audience. We do this in collaboration with artists, scientists, designers, and partner institutions. 

Our location, "De Biotoop," is an experimental lab for artistic research and project development. In this green oasis in the heart of the city, we have an aquaponics greenhouse where we grow plants and flowers, a perfume lab where we explore scent as an artistic medium, and a fermentation lab for research into biomaterials. At this unique location, we also have a restaurant (Mediamatic ETEN) where we serve delicious (vegan) food.

Building connections

The topics we address are not straightforward and often require explanation. For example, how do you explain what certain bacteria do, or how soap is made? And how can these developments be situated within an artistic (historical) and social context? The connection to the city and the cultural sector is also important: who can we engage with, and how? And where can we expand our network? 

We are looking for

We are looking for a creative and proactive team player who can promote our diverse program to a wide audience. As communications manager, you will be responsible for the online and offline promotion of events and exhibitions, expanding and maintaining Mediamatic’s network, liaising with the press, and overseeing the website’s editorial content. 

You will be working in a small team of about 8 full-time staff members. You will collaborate closely with program developers, curators, and artists to gather and create content for communications. In addition, you will mentor interns who assist the communications team.

Work

• Final editing of the website
• Curating and maintaining our social media
• Writing mailings and press releases
• Maintaining the contact database
• Managing our foundation’s marketing channels, including Google Ads, Instagram Ads, and poster campaigns around the city
• Planning and overseeing communication campaigns for events and exhibitions. 
• Supervising and mentoring interns
• Creating and selecting visual content in collaboration with management and photography and graphic design interns
• Maintain close contact with program managers, artists, and other colleagues.

Profile

• An interest in art, bioart, biodesign, sustainability, and/or food
• Enjoy writing and editing texts and content
• A sense of visual composition 
• You enjoy coming up with new ideas and you like brainstorming
• HBO / university level
• Well-known in Amsterdam's cultural scene 
• Maintain an overview and set priorities
• You have an independent and proactive approach to your work
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Fluent in Dutch and proficient in English (the primary language of our online channels is English)
• Knowledge of new media and active on social media
• Knowledge of design software (Adobe/Affinity) is a plus
• Connected to the diverse cultures of our city
• Available for 32–40 hours per week.
