NPO Radio 5 is the surprise hit of Dutch radio. Even without an FM frequency, the station still ranks among the most-listened-to radio stations every week. With a clear profile and a target audience that primarily seeks a sense of belonging, a clubhouse. NPO Radio 5 meets that need with a fantastic lineup of hosts and a wonderfully curated playlist that gives a prominent place to the 60s and 70s. The Evergreen Top 1000 is NPO Radio 5’s flagship annual event. The station has great potential and ambition, but its resources are not unlimited. This calls for vision, boldness, and leadership—as well as creativity and an unerring sense of our growing target audience.
As an assistant station manager, you know how to steer all forms of content from the broadcasters in the right direction, bring them together, and bring them to the attention of our listeners and viewers. You keep your social and musical antennae finely tuned. You think from the audience’s perspective, come up with creative station-wide ideas, and identify opportunities for content creation by the broadcasters. This could be for radio, but also online, in a podcast, or on demand. You have an unerring sense of what resonates with the audience, what they’re engaged with socially and musically, and how you can reach them.
In this role, you will lead the coordination teams (production and online) and bring together various channel-wide and program-specific activities to strengthen the channel. You will ensure that the audience is the top priority and that there is a clear concept and rationale behind the underlying ideas. In addition to leading the coordination teams, you will work closely with the station manager to maintain close contact with various broadcasters and colleagues in marketing and audience research. This ensures you are well-informed about what our audience wants to hear and see. You also play a coordinating role in the relationship between NPO Radio 5 and the music and festival world, which allows you to precisely position the station as strong, authentic, and socially engaged.
As deputy station manager, you will report directly to station manager Peter de Vries and serve as his right-hand person in day-to-day operations, in the broadest sense of the word. You will actively contribute to shaping the strategy and positioning of NPO Radio 5 and help enhance the station’s public value.
Initiative, independence, flexibility, strategic thinking, and a results-oriented approach are well-developed skills.
The position of Assistant Station Manager is a full-time role (36 hours per week). You will start with a one-year contract, and the salary ranges from €4,007 to €6,485 gross per month based on a 36-hour workweek. We determine the salary based on education, experience, and equal pay for all genders.

The NPO has a public mission: to serve the interests of every individual and society as a whole. In doing so, we are guided by the needs of our audience, regardless of their backgrounds or views. We want this to be reflected in our organization’s workforce. We believe in an inclusive organization that harnesses the power of diversity to achieve even better results. Because it is precisely because we differ from one another that we can arrive at new insights and better solutions. And that is exactly what we, as the NPO, are looking for. We are curious to learn who you are and what qualities and experience you bring to the table. Our job openings are therefore open to everyone.
