The Dutch National Opera & Ballet is one of the largest cultural organizations in the Netherlands and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. That’s where the magic happens on stage. With over 600 colleagues from 30 different countries, we work together every day to create spectacular opera and ballet productions. Every detail counts, which is why we value craftsmanship in every part of our organization. Would you like to be a part of this?
The choir of the Dutch National Opera (DNO) consists of permanent choir members and a flexible pool of additional choir members. The permanent choir currently consists of 53 singers. The choir leadership consists of the choir conductor and the choir manager. In practice, this means that the choir manager serves as the primary point of contact for both individual choir members and the organization (for general choir matters).
As choir manager, you create the conditions that allow the choir to contribute fully to the goals of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet. You will draw up seasonal plans and schedules, taking into account the programming, stage planning, the necessary preparation time, and the complex agreements regarding the choir’s maximum availability. Together with the assistant choir directors, you will organize auditions and oversee the hiring of additional choir members. Through your ideas regarding (structural) changes, you contribute to the development of the choir and its individual members. You also serve as a point of contact for the active Choir Subcommittee, various choir committees, and regular partners within the DNO choir network.
The choir director is responsible for the choir’s artistic direction and, in that role, works very closely with you. You will coordinate financial matters with the DNO’s business manager and maintain close contact with the HR and Artistic Affairs departments. You will lead the individual choir members, the extra choir, and the support staff, which consists of three part-time assistants and two assistant choir directors.
The choir is made up of dedicated and passionate professionals: many individual personalities who come together as one on stage. You understand the artistic and personal challenges this presents for groups of people, and you know how to tailor your approach to the situation. You are diplomatic, decisive, and have experience leading projects in an artistic environment. Thanks to your excellent communication skills, all stakeholders are not only well-informed, but you also create the necessary support for decisions and changes.
