The Dutch National Opera & Ballet is one of the largest cultural organizations in the Netherlands and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. That’s where the magic happens on stage. With over 600 colleagues from 30 different countries, we work together every day to create spectacular opera and ballet productions. Every detail counts, which is why we value craftsmanship in every aspect of our organization.
The Production and Stage Management Department is responsible for producing all of our opera and ballet productions and performances. In addition, the department provides production support for events of various sizes, such as the Ballet Dinner, the International Young Patrons Gala, the Open House, and Keti Koti. We do this with an independent team consisting of five production managers, nine performance managers, a small-scale programming coordinator, two event managers, two assistants, and a pool of freelancers.
As Head of Production and Performance Management, you play a central role in overseeing all production processes and are responsible for capacity planning. The department plays a key role within the organization and works closely with all parties involved in the programming and realization of productions: the opera and ballet staff, external artistic teams, our production workshops, the technical departments, and the departments of fundraising and relationship management, marketing, communications and audience engagement, education, participation, and programming. Where necessary, you support the production managers in their work, particularly with regard to challenges that extend beyond the specific production. You foster the learning capacity of the department and the organization, actively seek out opportunities for improvement, and follow up on them effectively. In various policy processes, you represent the importance of good contractor and client relationships, with clear frameworks and expectations. Effective staff planning is also part of your responsibility, taking into account the specific needs of each production run. The department head reports directly to the managing director.
As a department head, you have a keen sense of organizational dynamics, which allows you to quickly grasp what is happening within the organization. The diversity of clients and partners requires a high degree of organizational sensitivity and strong people skills. You share decisions and relevant information with the appropriate stakeholders, with the goal of representing all interests and ensuring the team works as efficiently as possible. It is important that you maintain a structured approach to work for both the organization and the team. In addition to operational tasks, this role requires you to actively engage in the professional and personal development of your own team. This involves, on the one hand, developing a departmental plan focused on process-oriented work, and on the other hand, actively guiding the team in their careers with a focus on their development and growth.
We believe it is important that you have extensive experience with challenging, high-level production work, organizing complex work processes, and managing large-scale financial projects in a similar environment, preferably in the performing arts or elsewhere in the creative sector. Do you possess demonstrable management skills and experience as a leader? Do you maintain a clear overview and composure in hectic or complex situations thanks to your positive attitude? And are you also able to set goals independently within agreed-upon frameworks and critically assess the progress of your own work and that of the team?
If so, we warmly encourage you to apply. At Dutch National Opera & Ballet, we strive for diversity and equality at all levels of the organization. That is why we warmly invite everyone, regardless of age, gender, or cultural background, to apply.
Interested? You can apply on our website through the "Apply" button until June 9. The first interviews will take place on June 13 or 17. The second round, which consists of two interviews, will take place between June 20 and 28.
