Pakhuis de Zwijger has a Board of Trustees that not only oversees the organization but also feels a shared responsibility for its future and operates on the basis of trust, expertise, and compassion. We are seeking a chairperson who embodies this vision: someone who, through both solicited and unsolicited advice, contributes to an open, just, and sustainable future for this unique institution.

About Pakhuis de Zwijger

Pakhuis de Zwijger is literally and figuratively at the heart of society. Our beautiful location on the IJ River is situated in the heart of Amsterdam. Pakhuis de Zwijger is a place for connection, dialogue, inspiration, and creation. Our ultimate goal is to make society and the world a little better and more beautiful every day. This is desperately needed and can only be achieved together. After nearly twenty years of building and programming as an independent platform for social dialogue, Pakhuis de Zwijger is on the cusp of a new phase. We have a solid foundation, a strong cultural profile, and significant social relevance. Now is the time to build on this stable foundation to strengthen our impact and anchor a new culture for the future.

The new chairperson is independent and fully aware of the new phase Pakhuis de Zwijger is entering. This is not merely an honorary position, but an active, unifying role that requires vision, integrity, and an awareness of the surrounding environment. The chairperson understands that cultural change does not happen on paper, but through behavior, dialogue, and leading by example.

The chairperson we are looking for:

  • Has extensive experience as a supervisor, director, or manager within complex (preferably cultural or social) organizations.
  • Possesses strategic insight and the ability to make room for other perspectives. Preferably with expertise in politics and public administration.
  • Is culturally sensitive, with a strong awareness of power dynamics and structural exclusion. Is reflective and works well as part of a Board of Trustees.
  • Understands the difference between power and authority and knows how to provide direction without resorting to top-down management. Contributes critical and constructive input on the organization’s social positioning and governance.
  • Has an affinity for PDZ’s mission and values, and specifically for issues such as inclusion, equity, sustainability, and urban development.
  • Recognizes and values diversity of opinion as a core value—not as a complication.
  • Contributes to the development of a safe, equitable, and forward-looking Pakhuis, with room for new voices and forms of leadership.
  • Flexible in terms of role and time commitment; willing to provide temporary expertise on specific topics.

Industry experience & outlook

For the role of chair, we are looking for someone whose background complements that of the current Supervisory Board. The following criteria are therefore desirable, and we also strongly encourage women and non-binary individuals to apply:

  • Knowledge of media, public relations, and/or international cooperation.
  • Has a network of donors, foundations, and businesses.
  • An affinity for diverse ethnic backgrounds and target groups.

In summary:

The ideal candidate is an experienced director and supervisor with a mix of experience in media, PR, and marketing communications, preferably with an international focus and experience in international collaboration, both within Europe and beyond. Experience as a supervisor and in leadership roles, with an affinity for governance as a core quality. The candidate is sensitive, reflective, and collaboration-oriented, and resonates with the values and mission of Pakhuis de Zwijger. The candidate also has a broad perspective that extends beyond the Randstad.

Terms & Conditions & Time Commitment

The Supervisory Board meets with the Executive Director an average of five times a year, with the Audit Committee twice a year, and also holds one or two internal meetings. Members serve on one or more committees (such as the Finance or Compensation Committee) and may occasionally be called upon to assist with strategic matters.

The position is unpaid, in accordance with the Cultural Governance Code; reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Would you like to help shape the future of Pakhuis de Zwijger?

Do you see yourself as a dedicated board member who wants to contribute to the organization’s strategic and operational direction? Apply by Wednesday, January 14, 2026, via Homerun and submit your cover letter and resume. For more information, please contact Lars Boering (Chair of the Supervisory Board) at rvt@dezwijger.nl.
