Edukans is an international NGO specializing in education. We create opportunities around the world so that children and young people can shape their futures with confidence. Edukans works to provide high-quality primary education, jobs for young people, education in emergency situations, and equal opportunities for boys and girls.

Founded in 2002 as a Dutch NGO, we have grown into a small-scale international NGO with country offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi and an annual turnover of €7 million. We aim to achieve greater impact not only by working at the individual school level, but also by making a structural commitment to improving teacher training, vocational training, and professional development.

We are looking for passionate professionals to join our Supervisory Board who are knowledgeable about international social developments and are committed to helping us make an even greater impact.

For both positions, we are looking for intrinsically motivated individuals who are actively engaged in society and who are eager to contribute their enthusiasm and expertise to our mission: creating opportunities worldwide so that children and young people can shape their future with confidence. The members of our Supervisory Board all possess a broad understanding of social developments, know what criteria to apply, and ask the right questions to help us achieve our objectives. We are looking for individuals with general supervisory skills who have sufficient time available to perform this role effectively.

Your profile

• You endorse Edukans’ mission and objectives and have a demonstrable affinity for them.
• You will serve as a sounding board for our director.
• You have a relevant network and are willing to leverage it and make it available to Edukans.
• You are highly capable of interpreting relevant social developments.
• You have an affinity with our target audience.
• You are a sparring partner with vision.
• You are seen as a connector, someone who engages in dialogue in a firm yet pleasant manner.
• You possess general managerial skills and experience, have an academic level of work and thinking, and are capable of managing at a strategic level.

Chair of the Supervisory Board:

As Chair of the Supervisory Board, you have a long-term vision and are expected to actively contribute ideas regarding Edukans’ future positioning. You will provide guidance on how Edukans, as an international NGO, should develop over the next 10 years to achieve its objectives. We are seeking your expertise regarding both the funding model and the organizational model. As Chair, you will lead the oversight process to ensure that the members of the Board are able to fulfill their roles to the fullest.

The Member of the Supervisory Board:

As an international education specialist focused on education systems, we are committed to further developing our vision of “Unleash the Power of Education.” Your expertise will enable you to provide guidance—from a supervisory role—on risks, investments, and strategic decisions to secure funding for the right programs. With your support, Edukans is evolving from a service-providing organization into a partner in strengthening national education systems.

General Duties and Powers of the Supervisory Board

• To exercise comprehensive oversight of the director’s policies and the general course of business within the organization and its affiliated institutions.
• Ensuring that the director performs his or her duties effectively.
• Approval of (strategic) decisions made by the director.
• An advisory role and a sounding board for the director.

The Supervisory Board meets six times a year. The Supervisory Board has an audit committee, a quality and safety committee, and a compensation committee. Each year, the Supervisory Board evaluates its own performance.
