More about this organization
A large group of people is gathered on a movie set, surrounded by professional lighting and cameras.

WHAT WE DO is a curious, innovative, and ambitious theater organization with a strong social mission. Driven by a deep love for the arts, we create multidisciplinary productions with the goal of making complex social dilemmas accessible, understandable, and “experiential” for a diverse audience. Themes include, for example, perception, intergenerational transmission, the impact of poverty, the justice system, or care for the elderly. We often do this through theater, but also through podcasts, theatrical conversations, and exhibitions. WAT WE DOEN chooses the format that best suits both the subject matter and the audience. All with the aim of sparking a conversation about the world around us.

We have built up a large network of social partners whom we involve from an early stage. As a result, we always work with a wide range of people—such as young people, professionals in healthcare or law enforcement, and researchers—when developing projects, and often with both professional and non-professional performers. Diversity and inclusivity are guiding principles in the composition of teams, the selection of topics, and our working methods. By working within program lines, we can generate greater impact together with our partners and the public.

WAT WE DO is a small organization consisting of artistic director/director Floris van Delft, executive director Aziza Sbiti, project coordinator Judith van Hemert, producer Elise de Fooij, technical producer Remko van den Ende, research and development editor Rachid Benhammou, and marketers Špela Semion and Marisa Santos da Cruz. We work with a flexible network of freelancers and assemble a new team for each production, bringing together performers, creators, and designers from diverse backgrounds—often a mix of trained professionals and self-taught individuals.

The organization receives ongoing support from the Performing Arts Fund and the City of Rotterdam. Currently, the foundation has a three-member board. This fall, we will transition to a Supervisory Board model. For that Board, we are seeking a new chairperson anda general member who isattuned to the world around us and hasan affinity for art and culture.

Chairperson

  • You have an extensive social network, including in administrative circles.
  • You have an understanding of the urban social context of cities like Rotterdam and can effectively apply this knowledge to the needs of smaller municipalities.
  • You are thoughtful and analytical.

General member

  • You are also interested in or knowledgeable about topics outside the cultural sector, such as healthcare, the legal system, business, or education.
  • You're a team player.

Administrative experience is a plus, but we’re more interested in who you are than in checking off a list of qualifications.

We offer

An inspiring and socially meaningful role at an organization that operates at the intersection of artistic and social impact, both locally and nationally.

Information & Application

This is a four-year appointment with the possibility of a second term. The position is unpaid. The Supervisory Board meets approximately five times a year in a pleasant, collegial atmosphere (online, hybrid, or in person). In addition, members of the Board are regularly invited to WAT WE DOEN events. The Supervisory Board aims to reflect the diversity of WAT WE DOEN in its composition.

If you have any questions, please contact Aziza Sbiti (Business Director) ataziza@watwedoen.nl. Please send us a brief statement of interest and introduction (CV or similar) in a format that works for you by November 5. Interviews will take place between November 20 and 27.
