Help shape the future of public broadcasting—as Vice Chair or a member of the NTR Supervisory Board.
The NTR is a public broadcaster with a clear mission and an independent status. As a non-member-based broadcaster, the NTR plays a unique role within the public broadcasting system: unbound, independent, and with a clear legal mandate. Its programming focuses on information, education, culture, youth, and diversity—with the guiding principle: by and for everyone. The NTR produces programs that are substantively strong and socially relevant. FromHet KlokhuistoNieuwsuur, fromDreamschooltoAndere Tijden—the NTR aims to inspire, inform, and contribute to a well-informed and inclusive society. The NTR’s strength lies in the combination of journalistic quality, educational impact, and cultural depth.
The organization is currently led by a single director, who bears ultimate responsibility for both operational and content-related matters and reports directly to the Supervisory Board. Within this structure, administrative clarity, shared responsibility, and mutual oversight between the supervisory and management bodies are of the utmost importance. As a public organization, the NTR is at the center of a changing society and a dynamic media landscape. Digitization, shifting audience expectations, and the social mission of public media mean that the NTR is constantly evolving—with quality, accessibility, and social value as its guiding principles.
The new Supervisory Board is being formed following a period in which there was a perceived disconnect between oversight and the organization, and a period in which the organization is part of a discussion about the future media landscape. In conversations with management, employees, and the works council, there was a shared desire for a “new-style” Board: engaged, visible, and with a sense of context. A new Board must bring calm, trust, and managerial stability. The current Board consists solely of a chairperson. To expand the Board and bring it up to full strength, we are now beginning the recruitment of three members who, together, will form the foundation for a committed and well-coordinated Board.
We are looking for an experienced regulator or executive with authority and a sense of public responsibility. You have an affinity for the NTR’s mission and understand the political and social dynamics within which public media operate. You have a strong network—particularly in The Hague—and understand that influence also lies in listening, connecting, and providing direction without taking over. You are a natural team builder, capable of creating space for diverse perspectives as chair, but also of providing direction and stability when necessary.
What are your proven qualifications?
We are looking for a supervisor with expertise in HR, organizational development, and workplace safety. You oversee the impact of change on people and organizational culture and know how to provide direction based on trust and connection. You understand how employee participation works and contribute to a work environment where transparency, safety, and inclusion are central. The Works Council is looking for a member who is visible and approachable, with a focus on organizational culture, and who serves as the primary point of contact for the Works Council.
What are the minimum requirements?
We are looking for a supervisor with expertise in public accountability, auditing, and governance. As a supervisor, you know how to review strategic decisions from a financial perspective without getting involved in the day-to-day operations. You understand the interplay between public funds, policy objectives, and societal impact, and you ask the right questions at the right time. Balance and independence are key to your approach.
What do you bring to the table?
Are you ready to help shape the future of a public broadcaster in transition? If so, we’d love to hear from you. NTR is being advised by Colourful People throughout this process. If you’re interested, please contact René Burgler, a partner at Colourful People, directly at r.burgler@colourfulpeople.nl or06 2857 5436. In a personal interview, we will explore your motivation and background, and address three key questions: what appeals to you most about serving on the NTR Supervisory Board, what do you believe is the essence of effective oversight within a public broadcaster, and how would you, based on your profile, contribute to the development of the “new-style” Supervisory Board?
Interviews with candidates will take place in the second half of June 2025. The appointment will be made by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science.
The NTR values diversity in background, perspective, and experience. We strongly encourage candidates who identify with these values to apply, even if they do not yet have supervisory experience, provided they possess the profile, motivation, and reflective skills necessary to successfully fulfill this role.
