  • As a team manager, would you like to translate digital developments into online communication for the City of Amsterdam?
  • Would you like to help Amsterdam continue to grow by making its online communications a success?
  • Do you create an environment where everyone feels heard, seen, recognized, and valued?

The position

As an Online Team Manager, you are a people- and results-oriented leader who builds on trust and connection to foster an inclusive, safe, and supportive work environment where employees can realize their potential. You are responsible for managing online communication initiatives.
You organize the necessary capacity and are responsible for the budget. You ensure that the core and network teams work together in a cohesive and goal-oriented manner, with each member contributing to the communication objectives of the project based on their own expertise and professional knowledge. You provide substantive guidance to the core and network teams while adhering to our frameworks and guidelines.

In addition, you are also responsible for personnel matters for the core team (max. 25 FTE), including conducting performance reviews, managing absenteeism, and handling administrative tasks.

As a team manager, you form part of the broader management team alongside the program manager and the executive team. This management team focuses on substantive issues, discusses the broader context and the progress of the annual plan (based on OGSM objectives), reviews case studies, and shares insights regarding the intended outcomes and how to work more holistically. In addition, the MT can split into smaller groups with specific and/or temporary areas of focus.

Ideally, the division of labor should be 70% management and 30% content. This depends on the individual and the situation and requires a tailored approach.

Here's what you do on an average workday

  • You are responsible for creating an environment where everyone feels heard, seen, recognized, valued, and safe;
  • You will support the team in their day-to-day work;
  • You will oversee and ensure that the City of Amsterdam’s online communications are clear, reliable, and accessible to all Amsterdammers, the organization, and the administration;
  • You will be involved in organization-wide online issues;
  • You will help ensure that online tasks are well organized and, if necessary, handle them yourself, depending on the nature of the work and the team.

This is where you get started

We strive to be a great employer that ensures all our colleagues feel seen and valued. We embrace the differences among our colleagues; these differences lead to better results for both our organization and our city. We aim to build a workforce that reflects Amsterdam’s diverse population. So, whoever you are, you’re more than welcome here!

Communication is evolving rapidly and becoming increasingly innovative. This requires us to respond to these developments ever more quickly in order to continue fulfilling our role as communication experts. But it also requires us to maintain our position as a reliable and service-oriented government and to serve our target groups better and faster. To do this, you need to stay informed about online developments and translate them into opportunities for online communication. You’ll do this in collaboration with the rest of the organization and external partners. As Online Team Manager, you’ll work together with the Online team managers and the Corporate Media team manager.

For the position of Online Team Manager, you must have:

  • Demonstrable experience in the (broad) field of online communication;
  • Experience in a similar role involving the comprehensive management of a team and task-oriented, collaborative teamwork;
  • Knowledge and application of communication tools such as the communication compass;
  • Experience in stakeholder management;
  • The ability to act strategically and provide advice on online initiatives within a complex—political—organization.

You should have the following skills:

  • Vision: You have a clear understanding of current trends in the field of online communication and a well-defined vision for the goals of the field and the team.
  • Awareness of the broader context: You demonstrate an awareness of the broader context by focusing on the common interest and cohesion when working on projects. You also possess the skills to build and maintain relevant internal and external networks (clients) and have strong communication skills.
  • Coaching: As a team manager, you serve as a coaching leader for the various specialists on the team. You identify talent, encourage personal and professional development, and build a network both within and outside the municipal organization. You support employees in performing their duties and encourage their personal development.
  • Responsibility: You are responsible for the work assigned to you. You are approachable and hold employees accountable for their behavior and responsibilities. You also demonstrate resilience in new and unexpected situations and are willing to take responsibility for your own actions and/or those of others, and accept the consequences.

What we offer you

As an Online Team Manager, you’ll be joining our team for 36 hours a week and can expect the following employment terms.

  • A gross monthly salary of up to €7,325 (pay grade 13) based on a 36-hour workweek. The exact salary will be determined based on your education, knowledge, and experience.
  • A one-year employment contract, with the possibility of a permanent contract thereafter, if you do not currently have a contract with the City of Amsterdam or have only a temporary contract.
  • If you already have a permanent employment contract with the City of Amsterdam, you will retain it and be transferred.
  • Opportunities for professional development and training. Our in-house training center, the Amsterdam School, offers a variety of training programs, professional development tracks, and on-the-job coaching to help you continue to challenge yourself.
  • An individual flexible budget (IKB) equal to 17.05% of your salary, which you can use for things like additional pension contributions or extra days off.
  • A pension plan with ABP, the pension fund for the public sector and education.
  • A travel allowance of €0.10 per kilometer for travel by car, €0.15 per kilometer for travel by bicycle, and €0.21 per kilometer for travel by public transportation. This applies to a one-way commute of up to 45 kilometers and for the number of days you work in the office.
  • For days you work from home, you will receive a work-from-home allowance of €3 net per workday that you work from home.
  • A monthly contribution toward health insurance.
  • Hybrid work: In this role, you can work partly from home and partly in the office. We provide the necessary equipment to help you set up a safe and healthy workspace at home.
  • A cell phone and/or laptop.
  • An office space in downtown Amsterdam, overlooking the canals.
  • An (electric) rental bike that lets you travel between work locations in a sustainable and healthy way.
