More about this organization
Three people are talking at the workplace; a woman wearing an apron is standing in the center, speaking, while two colleagues listen.

Did you know that the Rijksmuseum welcomes up to 150,000 students and 70,000 general visitors each year for guided tours or workshops? With 225 programs designed for elementary and secondary school students, families, businesses, and experts, among others, the museum educators bridge the gap between visitors, Dutch art, history, and social issues. To ensure this runs smoothly, we are looking for a Team Manager for the Museum Educators team. Does this sound like a great next step in your career?

The Rijksmuseum’s Public & Education Department is currently seeking a:

Team Leader, Museum Educators

Amsterdam, 32 hours per week

What are you going to do?

As Team Manager, you will support and lead the team of museum docents. The team consists of approximately 70 people who, with great enthusiasm and expertise, welcome groups every day for interactive tours and workshops.

You are the linchpin of the organization, liaising between museum docents, visitors, the planning department, and other departments. You build a close-knit team with an open and professional culture, where museum docents are eager to learn from and with one another and inspire each other. You harness and encourage diverse perspectives and areas of expertise within the team.

Examples of your responsibilities:

  • Tracking and managing contracts, leave, absences, etc.
  • Conducting development and evaluation meetings.
  • Daily briefings led by and featuring museum docents.
  • Discuss the schedule with the planning department.
  • Organizing the exchange of knowledge and expertise among museum educators.
  • Tracking training and certifications.
  • Recruiting and selecting new museum docents.

Working at the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands’ premier museum of art and history, with a collection of over 1 million objects from and about the Netherlands, spanning from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. The Rijksmuseum belongs to and is for everyone.

You will be part of the Public & Education department, and together with your colleagues, you will be responsible for ensuring the high quality of our programs and the visitor experience. As part of a team of three team managers, you will oversee the performance of the museum educators, establish work processes, and provide on-site guidance to the museum educators.

What we're looking for

We’re really curious to find out who you are and what talents you’ll bring to our team.

  • You have the ability to motivate, unite, and lead people.
  • You handle stress, a hectic schedule, setbacks, and adversity well.
  • You maintain a clear overview, work systematically, and can solve problems effectively.
  • You have experience with educational programs and/or in the museum sector.

What do you get in return?

  • A gross monthly salary of €3,087 to €4,041 based on a 36-hour workweek (Scale 9 of the museum collective bargaining agreement).
  • 8% vacation pay and 3.4% year-end bonus.
  • A one-year contract with the possibility of renewal.
  • Full reimbursement of public transportation costs for trips of 5 km or more (up to a maximum of €345). The costs you incur when you park your bike in a secure bike rack at the station are also fully reimbursed.
  • After your probationary period, you will receive a Museum Year Card that grants you unlimited access to 450 museums in the Netherlands. You are always welcome at the Rijksmuseum (during opening hours) with one guest.
  • Events such as the summer and winter festivals, the RijksRun, and more.

Interested?

Don’t wait—apply now for April 12, 2023. You can respond via the application form on the website. The application process is as follows:

  • Once we receive your resume and cover letter, we’ll get to work for you.
  • Do we see a good fit? If so, we’d love to schedule an initial interview. We’d like to hear about who you are, what experience you have, and what appeals to you about this position.
  • Was this interview also positive? If so, we’ll invite you for a second interview.
  • Are we both on board? If so, we’ll conduct a development assessment, and then we’ll make you an offer.
