  • As a dedicated manager, lead the integration team for family migrants in Amsterdam.
  • Build strong partnerships with various stakeholders and maintain a safe work environment for your team.
  • Provide direction in a dynamic and ever-changing environment and foster the team’s growth.

The position

Are you an inspiring leader looking for a challenging role in the integration of family migrants at a municipality? As a Family Migrant Team Manager, you will lead a team of 20 client advisors. You will oversee the implementation of the Integration Act and ensure the efficient coordination of work processes. You are responsible for management, ensuring quality standards, and fulfilling legal obligations.

As a team manager for family migrants, you play a crucial role in building strong partnerships with various stakeholders, including local government agencies, civil society organizations, and educational institutions. By facilitating and coordinating these partnerships, you help ensure the successful integration of family migrants in Amsterdam.

You serve not only as a bridge between your team, the management team, senior leadership, and the outside world, but also as a motivator and connector. You understand that the team operates in a complex environment that has a significant impact on family migrants. In this role, you ensure successful integration in Amsterdam and create a safe, trusting work environment where the well-being and job satisfaction of your team members are central. You coach employees based on their talents and ambitions, foster a sense of ownership, and encourage connection, all while providing inspiring leadership to ensure optimal team performance and development.

The team has indicated that it is looking for a strong communicator. In a diverse work environment where different perspectives come together, it is essential not only to give everyone a voice, but also to effectively translate these insights into well-considered decision-making. The team is committed to inclusivity and is looking for someone who can take this effort to the next level and actively build support for decisions.

The team is also looking for a leader who can effortlessly balance giving autonomy with driving results. You provide a framework and focus on results, while at the same time giving your team members the freedom to approach their work in their own way. You create a work environment where people are challenged, valued, and motivated to bring out the best in themselves and the team, and where shared successes are celebrated.

Here's what you do on an average day

  • Now that the board is committed to supporting vulnerable family migrants, you are working with the task force to develop a clear definition and an appropriate course of action. This is a challenge, as opinions are divided.
  • You’ll hold an introductory meeting with a new client advisor on your team to clearly discuss expectations and establish monitoring procedures, so that the client advisor knows the parameters within which they can determine their own approach.
  • The contract with the organization that assists family migrants with the labor market module is coming to an end. Together with the contract manager and project leader, you will discuss the next steps and provide advice on how to proceed.
  • The customer tracking system has been updated, but adoption is lagging. You analyze the bottlenecks and work with employees and the change team to develop a plan to accelerate implementation and encourage usage.
  • You’re having a conversation with an employee who wants to further their career. Together, you explore their ambitions and needs and draw up a concrete growth plan, encouraging them to take ownership.
  • You will hold a coordination meeting with your fellow family migrant team manager to ensure that the same messages are conveyed during the staff meeting.

This is where you get started

We strive to be a great employer that ensures all our colleagues feel seen and valued. We embrace the differences among our colleagues; these differences lead to better results for both our organization and our city. We aim to build a workforce that reflects Amsterdam’s diverse population. So, whoever you are, you’re more than welcome here!

The Work, Participation, and Income (WPI) Department is a department within the social sector. The WPI Department’s goal is to enable every Amsterdam resident to participate in society, each according to their own abilities. WPI consists of approximately 20 divisions, one of which is the Integration and Language Division. The department has seven teams: five teams for Status Holders, two teams for Family Migrants, and one team for Adult Education. Through intensive client support, we ensure that new Amsterdammers fulfill their integration obligations. As much as possible, this is done through a dual approach, meaning we encourage participants to work, participate in society, or pursue education simultaneously. Team members look out for one another and work passionately and closely together. The department is constantly evolving and developing. That’s why there are many opportunities in our department, making your work—which is already very varied—even more interesting.

What you bring

For this position as Team Manager for Status Holders, you must have:

  • Several years of experience coaching groups and individuals. Please specify the time period(s) in your resume.
  • Demonstrable experience in fostering an inclusive and safe work environment. Please explain in your cover letter how you have achieved this.
  • Demonstrable experience in driving results. Explain how you have done this in your cover letter.
  • Demonstrable experience in change management projects involving various stakeholders. Please provide specific examples of this in your cover letter or resume.
  • Completed at least one training program, course, or MD program in the past two years focused on the development or refinement of leadership skills.

You should have the following skills:

  • Inclusive leadership:You create a safe and inclusive work environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. You can effortlessly adapt your approach to different conversation partners and target groups. You tailor complex information to the recipient to ensure clarity regarding expectations and decisions. By structuring conversations and fostering open dialogue, you ensure that all perspectives are incorporated into the decision-making process. In doing so, you bridge divergent viewpoints and build broad support, leading to stronger, more inclusive decisions.
  • Results-oriented:You set clear goals and work toward achieving results, while maintaining your focus and priorities. The team has important objectives to achieve, and you ensure that plans are actually implemented. You monitor progress, identify bottlenecks, and make adjustments where necessary. In doing so, you maintain a focus on quality, efficiency, and the long-term impact of decisions. Even in a dynamic environment, you know how to stay on course and motivate others to achieve the desired results together.
  • Collaboration:You are a unifying figure who fosters transparent collaboration and is capable of working with the management team to build a strong department. You have an excellent understanding of government and administrative dynamics. You can lead a diverse team in an inspiring way.
  • Learning and Growth:You have a curious and open mindset and are constantly focused on development—both your own and that of others. You are open to feedback, reflect on your own actions, and actively seek opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills. You foster a culture of learning within the team, encourage experimentation, and create an environment where people feel safe to grow. By embracing change and seizing opportunities, you contribute to an agile and forward-thinking organization.
  • Innovation-oriented:definition: recognizing opportunities and possibilities for innovating work processes, products, or services; you prioritize, organize, and encourage innovation. You prefer to test improvements rather than maintain the status quo.
