Do you know what climate issues are at play and how to align them with our mission? Do you have experience with engaging public communication? And do you enjoy leading a team of communication professionals and growing together? If so, we have a great job for you.
We are currently looking for a:
Experienced Communications Team Leader (0.8–1.0 FTE / 30–37.5 hours)
Milieudefensie aims to influence the public debate on climate change in such a way that major polluters will comply with the Paris Climate Agreement. For the Communications team, we are looking for an experienced and driven team leader who is ready to tackle this challenge head-on with the team. Together, you will work to find the right hooks to engage the public, bringing our message to the forefront and inspiring people to take action. You possess strategic insight and a knack for working with people, focus on achieving set goals, and contribute to fostering positive relationships within the organization.
What will you be doing?
- You will develop an overarching communication strategy within the framework of the General Policy Plan.
- You translate the communication strategy into clear, practical guidelines for the various communication specialists and activities, and ensure that they are properly implemented.
- You will develop a content strategy focused on reach and engagement and ensure the quality and consistency of the various communications across different channels.
- You creatively seek out new angles to reach a wider audience and inspire them to take action.
- You will oversee projects such as improving internal communication.
- As part of the communications team, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and aligning the work.
- You will represent the interests of the communications department in dealings with other departments and management. You will ensure that communications is well represented in Milieudefensie’s (campaign) activities.
- You are the HR manager for the communications team.
- You will develop the annual plan and budget for communications, monitor the budget, and prepare reports for management and the executive board.
What are you bringing?
- You have completed a relevant degree program at the associate's degree level.
- You have at least 7 years of work experience as a communications specialist at a professional organization, including another NGO or social organization, with several of those years spent in a managerial role.
- You have a bird's-eye view of what's happening within the organization and make connections; you coordinate and maintain relationships with other teams.
- You have experience leading a team of professionals in a coaching and collaborative manner.
- You have experience in strategic consulting and know how to persuade people using data-driven insights.
- You have experience managing suppliers and research firms.
Who do you work with?
You will lead a team of 13 staff members who work on public campaigns, corporate communications, branding, and providing support to other departments such as fundraising and movement-building. You will also supervise two editors of Down to Earth Magazine, an editorially independent magazine with a circulation of 40,000.
You will report to the Head of Communications & Fundraising and work closely with the other team leaders (Fundraising, Online Marketing & Social Media, Data). Drawing on your expertise in communications, you will play a role in one or more projects within the Big Polluters campaign. This means you will also collaborate with many different colleagues, including campaigners, lobbyists, and content specialists.
