Does art, culture, and creative education make your heart race? Do you have extensive experience in sustainability and education, and do you have the ambition and ability to help HKU work toward becoming a climate-neutral university? Then we’re looking for you!

With over 4,000 students, HKU is the largest university of the arts in the Netherlands and one of the largest educational institutions in Europe focused on art, culture, and the creative industries. HKU offers a wide range of programs across nine academies.

Where will you be working?

HKU exists because creating art offers new perspectives, inspires thought-provoking interactions, and thereby gives shape and meaning to society and the challenges it faces. As HKU, we are at the heart of that society and strive to be as diverse and inclusive as possible. Our success depends entirely on the quality of our people and the ideas they bring. That is why we are curious about your talent and how you can make a difference for our organization.

You will be working in the Facilities Department, but your role will explicitly span the entire institution given its scope and impact. This position is characterized by its broad mandate as well as close ties to all departments within the college. Furthermore, it is important that in this role you help the organization develop so that it can handle these matters independently in the future.

What will you be doing?

  • As a project manager, you will work on the university’s strategic goal of moving toward climate neutrality by 2030 and report to the Director of Back Office Facilities;
  • The university has been taking steps for quite some time to make our processes, buildings, and facilities more sustainable. It is your task to thoroughly assess these activities, consolidate them, raise awareness of them, strengthen them where possible, and help launch new initiatives;
  • You will organize meetings, campaigns, and activities focused on raising awareness, fostering collaboration, and promoting the development of the organization and its employees/students in the area of sustainability;
  • You will align your work with HKU’s initiatives on the theme of sustainability in education and research. In doing so, you will seek coordination and synergy with HKU colleagues working on the focus area “The Art of Sustainability and Circularity”;
  • You will represent the university both internally and externally on the topic of sustainability. You will liaise with department heads, the Board of Governors, and the Central Employee Participation Council on strategic issues and policy development.

What do you bring to the table?

  • University-level work and thinking skills;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and expertise in the areas of sustainability and education;
  • At least four years of work experience as a project manager;
  • Connecting qualities: you are attuned to differences within the organization and look for commonalities;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills: You are able to empathically motivate people, win them over, and guide them toward the behavior needed to achieve our goals.
  • Ultimately, you will be able to achieve results and drive change in a structured and inspiring way, and make a real impact.

What do we offer?

  • This is a temporary position, for 2 days a week (0.4 FTE) and for a maximum of 8 months; employment as a self-employed contractor is possible.
If you are an employee:
  • In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for higher professional education, this position is classified at the highest level in pay scale 12 (gross monthly salary for full-time employment ranging from €5,584 to €7,535);
  • Vacation pay (8%) and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
  • Time and resources to support your professional development, well-being, and long-term employability;
  • A good pension plan, commuting allowance, parental leave, and much more.

Would you like more information and/or to apply?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Felipe Salve, Director of Facilities, at06-28339168or viafelipe.salve@hku.nl. Please use this email address exclusively for asking questions.

  • Applications will be accepted through December 16, 2025. Interviews will be held on Thursday, December 18.
  • A cover letter is not required. However, we would like to receive your resume and your answers to the following questions, in your own words, so that we can get a good idea of what you bring to the table:
    - Why does working in this context appeal to you?
    - What do you see as the biggest challenges for you in this role?
    - Can you give an example of similar experiences in this role or with this assignment?

This position is being advertised both internally and externally. In our selection process, we recognize the value that diversity brings to our organization. We do not welcome unsolicited recruitment efforts regarding this position.
