Theater De Steeg is Groningen’s leading theater company that creates theater for, by, with, and about young people (ages 11 and up). We produce theater performances on social issues, which we present at and for secondary schools (including special education) and vocational schools in the northern Netherlands. In addition, we develop workshops, lessons, and theater projects that allow young people to actively engage with theater themselves.
As far as we’re concerned, theater is the ideal way to open up discussions on various topics and contribute to the personal, social, and creative development of young people. Our theater performances are an exercise in imagination and empathy, encouraging you to take a fresh look at your own ideas and beliefs. Making theater together is a playful way to connect with one another and learn to see each other in a new light. We challenge young people to use their imagination and creativity to devise solutions for the challenges they face, both now and in the future. Because of its form—direct and intimate—theater speaks to a different level than that of reason, intellect, and cognition: theater is about meeting, connecting, living together, empathy, and connection.
Our organization consists of a small core staff: artistic direction (0.4 FTE), business management (0.6 FTE), education (0.4 FTE), and sales (0.6 FTE). In addition, we work with approximately 25 interns (vocational and higher vocational education) and a similar number of freelancers each year: directors, actors, technicians, designers, etc. Together, we organize 300 performances, workshops, and projects annually for 18,000 young people.
Our board currently consists of four members and one trainee, one of whom will be leaving soon. We are therefore looking for a new treasurer:
Governance is a serious matter, and we naturally adhere to the Cultural Governance Code. We also believe it is important to leave room for creativity, perspective, and a touch of humor. We believe in the power and creativity of diversity. Harnessing different talents and perspectives strengthens our organization and broadens our view of society.
The board meets approximately six times a year with the management of De Steeg, consisting of Karin Noeken (artistic director) and Marieke Voorzee (executive director). The board receives no compensation for its work on behalf of the foundation. However, it does receive a great deal of appreciation, gratitude, and satisfaction.
Do you recognize yourself in the profile described above? Would you like to collaborate with us on (educational) youth theater? Can you contribute your ideas, experience, and network? If so, please send an email with a cover letter and your resume to zakelijk@theaterdesteeg.nl by March 25, 2024..
