Stroom The Hague is a multifaceted arts organization with a range of responsibilities and functions within The Hague’s visual arts sector. Stroom believes in the power of the relationship between art and society. Over the past 30 years, Stroom has developed into a center of expertise for contemporary visual art in a national and international context, with a special focus on The Hague’s arts scene and art in public spaces. This focus is reflected in all of Stroom’s functions, such as its varied exhibition program, its initiatives to support The Hague’s arts scene—including grants—and its policy on art in public spaces.
Stroom is currently working to build a healthier, more robust, and future-proof organization. This effort provides direction for the implementation of the current Arts Plan 2021–2024 and lays the groundwork for a potential role as a system institution starting with the next Arts Plan 2025–2028. The transition from a board model to a supervisory board model in 2023 is also part of this professionalization effort.
Treasurer
Stroom is a foundation with a remote board. It oversees the policies of the two-person executive team (artistic and business directors), the achievement of the foundation’s objectives and activities, and the general conduct of the foundation’s affairs. In doing so, it adheres to the Cultural Governance Code, the Diversity and Inclusion Code, and the Fair Practice Code. In addition, the board serves as the employer of the executive team. The division of roles between the board and the management is primarily laid out in the articles of incorporation and the management regulations. Within this formal framework, the board acts as an advisor and sparring partner to the management.
When selecting board members, the organization seeks to identify individuals with complementary expertise in the fields of visual arts, politics, urban development, and finance. In addition, the organization strives for a balanced composition that reflects diversity, for example in terms of gender, expertise, age, and cultural background.
In addition to the above, the selection of the new treasurer will specifically take into account:
The board meets four to six times a year, and as often as necessary due to specific circumstances or events. The presence of board members at specific openings and events is greatly appreciated.
The board has initiated a process that will soon lead to a transition to a model with a supervisory board. The new treasurer will be involved in this transition.
The board does not receive any compensation for its work. Board members receive an attendance fee for meetings they attend.
For further information, please contact Hanneke Beynen (interim executive director) or Joost Vrieler (chair of the board).
