Your role
Team West is one of seven teams within the Investigations Division and conducts (large-scale) criminal investigations. These investigations are carried out by detectives under your supervision, under the direction of an investigation leader. This is done under the authority of a public prosecutor from the Public Prosecution Service. Within the team of approximately 20 people, various roles are involved in this work, such as investigation leaders, (senior) tactical investigators, (senior) financial investigators, forensic analysts, IT audit investigators, and assistant investigators.
As a manager, you—along with your fellow managers and the IOD Management Team—are one of the driving forces behind the continued development of the IOD division. You are a member of the Investigation Management Team and the IOD’s broader Management Team. Together, you work to strengthen cohesion within the department and the connection with the Intelligence & Strategy department, so that we can combat fraud as effectively as possible and make the work better and more enjoyable. You are the link between the Management Team and the team members. You implement policy, keep your employees informed of developments within the department, and actively encourage and support them in participating in these efforts. Your responsibilities also include serving as the portfolio holder for a number of topics to be determined jointly.
You will oversee the efficient and effective conduct of criminal investigations by the lead investigators, ensuring that work is carried out in a structured, planned, and project-based manner. These investigations involve close collaboration with colleagues from other NVWA departments and other investigative agencies, such as the FIOD, ILT-IOD, and the police.
In addition, you are a general investigating officer and an assistant public prosecutor, or are willing to obtain these qualifications, and you will exercise investigative powers yourself when appropriate.

You will be working in the Intelligence and Investigation Service (IOD) division. The IOD is one of the four Special Investigation Services (BOD) in the Netherlands and conducts criminal investigations across all areas of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). The IOD has 180 employees, divided into two departments and eleven teams.
The Investigation Department consists of seven teams: five Investigation teams in Eindhoven, Wageningen, Zwolle, and Utrecht, the Forensics team, and the Digicluster team, both located in Utrecht. Each team has a team leader. The department is led by the Head of the Investigation Department, who, together with the Head of Intelligence & Strategy and the Director of NVWA-IOD, forms the IOD Management Team.
Criminal investigations are one of the enforcement tools the NVWA uses to improve compliance across a wide range of sectors. We are here to tackle serious, often supply-chain-related and cross-border, fraud and other criminal activity within the NVWA’s areas of responsibility. From our independent position, supported by in-depth knowledge and the ability to utilize (special) investigative powers, we are an indispensable link in enforcement for the NVWA and its partners. We are visionary and decisive in our approach to fraud from a broad perspective, with a focus on effective intervention that maximizes societal impact.
This involves close cooperation with other divisions of the NVWA (in particular the Inspection Division), the Public Prosecution Service (OM), other special investigation services (BODs), the National Police, and investigative services and authorities abroad, whether or not through Europol and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).
In the Netherlands, we take it for granted that the products we use and everything we eat are safe. We expect animals to be treated well, even if they are destined for slaughter. We want to be able to consume fruits and vegetables without a second thought, and other products are “naturally” fine too. We want to be able to walk in nature without worry and buy toys for our children without suspicion. As consumers, we simply rely on that; for us, it goes without saying.
But we sometimes forget that companies work hard every day to maintain those high standards. That it isn’t always easy for business owners to comply with all applicable laws and regulations. We also forget that the government oversees this. Safety sounds so simple, but it isn’t.
What does the NVWA do?
The staff of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) work hard every day to maintain that standard. Through dialogue with businesses in the hospitality sector, slaughterhouses, plant cultivation, and other producers, the NVWA monitors food and product safety, plant health, and the welfare of animals, nature, and the environment. We do so in accordance with national and international laws and regulations. We operate on a basis of trust, but we take firm action against businesses that do not adhere strictly to the rules. In the interest of society.
We closely monitor where the greatest risks lie and where oversight is most urgently needed, so that we can inform consumers and others in a timely manner. The NVWA also plays a key role in export inspections and in the import of products into Europe.
What does the NVWA stand for?
The NVWA is responsible for overseeing animal welfare, animal health, food safety, product safety, tobacco and alcohol prevention, plant health, and nature and the environment.
The Dutch government strives to be an employer that every employee—regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background, or disability—wants to work for. Addressing social issues in diverse teams makes us more effective and innovative. That makes the work meaningful and challenging.
The NVWA is an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature (LVVN) and the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport.
