The National Theater is seeking an Education & Interaction Manager. This department creates educational and contextual programs for our audience, from young to old. Our offerings take many forms and always seek to foster dialogue. The goal is to open visitors’ minds, encouraging them to view themselves, others, and the world with an open perspective.
As a manager, you are entrepreneurial; you identify and capitalize on opportunities, and you motivate and bring people together. You are familiar with creative processes. As a member of the management team, you contribute to an inspiring and innovative organization. You will be given the freedom to shape your role as a manager in your own way.
Het Nationale Theater is the largest touring theater company in the Netherlands. We take our productions to more than 40 cities across the country. With two companies (Het Nationale Theater and HNTjong), we are the only national theater organization that produces performances for all ages. We are based in three theaters in The Hague: the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui, and Zaal 3. We are located in the heart of the city, among palaces, government ministries, and working-class neighborhoods. In our venues, we commemorate our shared past and celebrate the festivities that unite us. Het Nationale Theater prioritizes accessibility, for example through HNTonbeperkt. HNTonbeperkt does everything in its power to ensure that a disability, whether visible or invisible, is not a barrier to coming to the theater. We present our own productions, but we also provide a stage for companies and creators from across the country: from cabaret to drama, from dance to theater lectures.
What will you be doing:
· You will lead the HNT Education & Interaction department, focusing on its three core areas: education, contextual programs, and HNTonbeperkt, and will work closely with the program leaders of these teams.
· Together with your teams, you translate the long-term policy into clear goals and diverse programs.
· You will support the teams, ensure clear work processes, and oversee the proper execution of HR tasks. You will receive administrative support in this role. You will report to the theater director.
· You will be part of the management team that will shape the implementation of our ambitious multi-year strategic plan.
· You will work closely with all departments, particularly HNTjong. You think strategically and seek to establish thematic connections between all projects.
· You will represent Het Nationale Theater in the field—preferably one you are already familiar with—and build an extensive national network. You will also identify opportunities for your teams to make a significant impact in the city.
· You are responsible for preparing and implementing the sub-budget. You seek additional funding to carry out projects.
· You will perform all of these tasks during regular business hours. Due to projects, you will often need to be at the theater outside of regular business hours. Please keep in mind that we expect you to be flexible.
Who we're looking for:
· You have a clear vision and are convinced of the power and value of art in society.
· You have experience with or have participated in creative production processes.
· You have experience leading a team, coaching, building relationships, and delegating.
· You inspire and challenge the teams you lead—teams that are eager to take ownership and work independently.
· You are a networker who sees the big picture and fosters collaboration, both within the organization and beyond.
· You ideally have a network in the cultural or theater sector.
As a national venue located in the heart of one of the four major cities, it goes without saying that, in addition to our productions and programming, everyone in The Hague should be able to see themselves reflected in our organization. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where LGBTQ+ individuals and people from diverse cultural backgrounds are warmly welcomed. We believe that we grow stronger through people who complement one another. We seek this diversity, for example, in knowledge, skills, and experience, but also in gender, background, and culture. This position is emphatically open to everyone in society.
What we offer you:
The National Theater has a staff of 180. You will manage a team of 15 colleagues and work in an organization at the forefront of developments in the theater world. You will work with the best in the field, and every door is open to you so that you can fulfill your role in a creative way. The position is classified in scale 10 of the Collective Labor Agreement for Theater and Dance (4,462–6,002).
