More about this organization
Two young people are laughing together as they look at a book in a library, with a bookshelf in the background.

The Amstelland Library is the organization dedicated to knowledge and culture in the Amstelland region. It operates in Amstelveen, Aalsmeer, and Uithoorn.

The library is more vibrant than ever. More and more visitors, all of whom leave happy and inspired—that is our goal. In our libraries, in neighborhoods, in education—we are everywhere. A few key themes for the coming years include getting more children to read, helping people participate in the digital world, and enriching the cultural offerings with unique programming. An ambition we are realizing together with residents and partners.

An ambition that is not only important but also makes work very enjoyable.

The position

  • You are a member of our management team; together, you are responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s policies and (financial) objectives.
  • You are specifically responsible for the library’s public cultural, social, and educational programs, as well as its educational offerings for schools.
  • You will monitor the progress of the annual plans and focus on achieving concrete results for and in collaboration with the network and all users.
  • You proactively foster local connections by developing and promoting innovative and cost-effective activities and concepts.
  • You will ensure the continuity of current (educational) services, monitor quality, explore new markets, and launch new products and services.
  • In collaboration with our (educational) partners, you will work to ensure a stable and sustainable financial foundation for the activities of the Amstelland Library
  • You will share responsibility for securing local and regional grants, sponsorships, operating revenues, and other external funding sources.
  • You will lead the education and programming team, which consists of five reading media consultants and three programmers.

The department and the assignment

Together with your team, you’ll build connections with the local community to promote language skills, a love of reading, media literacy, and digital and cultural development. You’ll set clear guidelines for your team, encourage creativity, and work with them to translate these ideas into engaging programs. In doing so, you’ll take the next steps in developing a segmented client offering based on clear, well-defined choices.

Externally, you will use your networking skills to strengthen relationships with our partners and municipalities. You enjoy establishing and maintaining contacts, identifying opportunities, and turning them into action. You also know how to take advantage of opportunities for additional grants.

Project-based work and process management are key priorities for the phase the organization is currently in. Later this year, we will begin the process of developing a new long-term vision, in which the library’s three social missions will be clearly defined.

What are you bringing?

You are a manager who identifies and evaluates opportunities and trends at an early stage. Together with your team, you know how to translate these into an attractive suite of services for our clients and partners.

You are a genuine, goal-oriented team player and possess the following qualities:

  • Your qualifications: You hold a bachelor’s degree, for example in management. Knowledge of pedagogy and teaching methods is a plus.
  • Your experience: You have at least 5 years of relevant work experience, during which you have held demonstrable leadership roles.
  • You possess strong analytical skills, which enable you to make strategic decisions and clearly distinguish between what is essential and what is secondary.
  • Your personality: You are a networker who can connect topics and stakeholders and mobilize people and resources. Because only by working together with local governments and educational institutions can we systematically promote reading and improve digital literacy among children and young people.
  • You have a vision for and experience with social-educational and cultural programming, as well as programming in collaboration with communities
  • You have a vision for and experience in developing educational programs focused on the joy of reading and digital literacy
  • You have experience applying for and managing project grants
  • You have knowledge of local (political) dynamics
  • You have experience working with specific target audiences and a good sense of marketing and publicity

We also consider your personal qualities to be just as important: you’re enterprising and creative, a natural networker with strong organizational skills; you take the initiative while keeping a close eye on the (financial) parameters. You’re reliable, clear, and transparent: you say what you’ll do and do what you say.

What do we offer?

A challenging and varied position with room for initiative. You will be working as part of an enthusiastic management team within a dynamic and welcoming organization where passionate employees collaborate to achieve major social goals. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Public Libraries and depend on your knowledge and work experience.  The position is classified in pay scale 11. The estimated salary ranges from €4,241 to €5,527 for a 36-hour workweek, excluding vacation pay and a year-end bonus.
