More about this organization
Two colleagues are walking through a modern glass hallway with a wooden floor in an office building.

It is the city of the good life. Limburg at its best. A city that continues to develop from a rich history and distinguishes itself as an international university city in a dynamic knowledge region. It is a wonderful city to live and work in. And above all, it is a wonderful city to work for the people who live here. We do this with great enthusiasm as a municipality; with 1,800 colleagues, external partners, the Mayor and Aldermen (B&W), and the City Council.

Working for Maastricht means working for a large municipality (122,000 residents). We are in the midst of a shift toward a more “outside-in” approach. And if you’re the candidate we’re looking for, you’ll understand exactly what we mean. We’re looking for an experienced manager for our Economy & Culture department.

Your workweek at a glance

As the manager of the Economics & Culture department, you—along with your fellow managers on the management team—have a significant impact on the professionalization of this field. It is a challenging role in which you oversee the big picture, provide guidance, and maintain a broad perspective. These are the three core responsibilities involved.

Leadership. Top priority. You are the leader of your team—the mentor and the source of inspiration. You’re the manager with whom colleagues can brainstorm and bounce ideas off. Your colleagues are experienced and highly knowledgeable. You are the coach who empowers them to achieve the best possible results. You speak the language of politics as a partner to the executive board and the council. At the same time, as a manager, you know how to empower your employees and help them excel. In this role, you work closely with the two team managers.

Management Team. In this role, you will be a member of the Physical Domain Management Team and a key advisor to the municipal executive and senior management in the area of Economy & Culture.

Networking. You’ll get to know all the major players in the city. Maastricht is a major cultural hub and an economic powerhouse. Your department is responsible for maintaining this important regional and Euregional position. You are a connector and a natural point of contact for partners in economic and cultural matters. On the one hand, you strengthen our position by gaining allies for important plans and celebrating successes together. On the other hand, you are the person who defuses tensions when the situation calls for it.

Your expertise

  • You are a leader who understands the art of maintaining a clear direction while keeping the big picture in mind. You have confidence in the strength of your employees, guiding and adjusting their course as a mentor. No less, and certainly no more. Thanks to your leadership, people feel empowered and well-equipped for their tasks.
  • Your extensive experience in a leadership role within a government organization has equipped you to effectively balance strategy and execution.
  • Are you an expert in economics and culture? That’s a plus, but not a requirement. You do, however, have the academic background and the drive to quickly master the subject matter.
  • You have a keen sense of political and administrative dynamics and a clear vision.
  • You’ve probably already gathered from our story that it’s your persuasiveness, a “get things done” mindset, and your people skills that make you an effective manager.
  • The City of Maastricht is constantly evolving. As a result, the actual composition of your department may change in the coming period. If you become the new manager, we invite you to help us think through these changes.

Good employment practices

  • The opportunity to play a key role in the development of a prominent city like Maastricht—a city that’s in the spotlight. We offer a significant portfolio and a platform where you can fully leverage your experience.
  • Starting with a one-year contract, we aim to build a long-term partnership so that you have the time to bring your plans and vision for this role to fruition.
  • Your salary will fall within pay scale 15 of the Municipalities Collective Bargaining Agreement and ranges from €6,395 to €8,889, depending on your background.
  • In addition, you will receive 17.05% of your gross salary in the form of a flexible spending account (FSA). This allows you to customize part of your employment benefits according to your preferences, such as: leave, company fitness programs, training, and/or union dues. This amount includes your vacation pay and a year-end bonus.
  • You also have the option to accrue ADV, and your pension is accrued through the ABP.

Are you excited?

We hope our story has given you a good sense of this wonderful opportunity. Now we’d really like to get to know you. The first step is up to you. Apply by January 6, 2025, via theapplication button and show us who you are and how you envision our collaboration. Do you have any questions first? Feel free to contact Karolien Leonard, Director of Physical Domain, at 0611203287, or Ton Teunissen, HR Business Partner, at 0621584228.
