De Balie's Mission
De Balie, a center for art and culture, believes that an open, pluralistic, democratic society governed by the rule of law is the best kind of society. This belief guides everything we create, do, and undertake. Through our programs, we bring people together and foster dialogue, even when that can be difficult. Encounter and the free exchange of ideas are central to our journalistic and artistic productions. Every day, De Balie organizes programs for the public on current events presented in an artistic form, which can also be followed via our livestream. We present programs in Amsterdam, throughout the Netherlands, and internationally.
De Balie operates on the belief that the performing arts are an excellent way to encourage the public to engage in introspection, empathy, reflection, and new insights. We create our programs with a diverse editorial team of fifteen program curators who give free rein to new ideas and initiatives and by collaborating with speakers and organizations from all walks of life and every corner of the globe.
As an incubator and catalyst for empowerment, De Balie is the place where artists, emerging talents, thinkers, scientists, activists, politicians, and the public come together and connect.
