More about this organization
Three colleagues are working together at a table with a laptop and documents in a modern office with glass walls.

Portaal works to create neighborhoods where residents feel at home and look out for one another. With a severe housing shortage, the climate crisis, and social inequality, we face significant challenges. Together with residents and partners, we develop creative solutions to make neighborhoods more inclusive and livable. Our goal? To contribute to a better community.

About the role

As Data Lab Manager, you will be responsible for leading the strategic transition to a data-driven organization. With a team of 10 dedicated specialists, you will drive strategic impact on key areas such as sustainability, tenant satisfaction, property maintenance, and resilient neighborhoods. Your team works on future-oriented data models and predictive algorithms that contribute to smart decision-making and innovation within Portaal. At the same time, you foster connections with internal and external stakeholders and strengthen the Data Lab’s position both within and outside the organization.

What makes this position special

In this role, you’ll have a unique opportunity to take data-driven work at Portaal to the next level. As Data Lab Manager, you’ll not only lead a transition process but also make a direct contribution to addressing societal challenges. You’ll work closely with various departments, such as Digital Transformation, Real Estate, and Residents, to bring data-driven innovations to life. You’ll play a key role in moving from description and analysis to more predictive and forward-looking systems, so that Portaal can make better decisions and increase its impact. You’ll also work on implementing a roadmap for future-oriented technologies, increasing Portaal’s data maturity, and establishing the right governance for our data management.

In addition, you will initiate projects that have a direct impact on residents and neighborhoods. These might include improving maintenance plans, tenant satisfaction, or the quality of life in neighborhoods. With your strategic vision, leadership, and innovative approach, you will ensure that Portaal makes the transition from follower to leader in data-driven work.

Your responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership: You will guide the transition from a focus on reporting to a strategic, data-driven organization, develop a long-term vision for data-driven operations, and be able to lead the organization through this process.
  • Team Development: You will lead a team of data engineers, BI specialists, data scientists, and other professionals. You will foster their professional growth, encourage collaboration, and build and position the team within Portaal.
  • Innovation and Technology: You translate external trends and developments into concrete opportunities for Portaal. You implement new technologies and tools that contribute to better insights and processes.
  • Collaboration: You will strengthen collaboration with internal departments and external partners, such as research institutes and fellow housing associations, to maximize the impact of data. As a member of the Strategy Management Team, you will work together to enhance Portaal’s strategic, data-driven, and innovative capabilities.
  • Results-oriented: You ensure that data-driven innovations lead to tangible results, such as improved maintenance plans, higher tenant satisfaction, and future-proof neighborhoods. You create clarity and set priorities: Datalab always receives a large volume of inquiries. You bring structure and clarity to the process, know when to step in, but can also stay calm and decide what needs to be addressed first.

Our ideal candidate

  • Experience: At least 3 years of managerial experience in a data-driven environment. A background in digital transformation and data analysis is preferred, as is experience leading organizational change initiatives.
  • Vision: You have a strategic perspective on data-driven work and know how to translate this into operational results. You look far into the future, but can also apply this to the present and identify the first steps we need to take.
  • Leadership: You inspire and motivate team members and stakeholders, and you are capable of leading complex change initiatives. You have excellent communication skills and can explain complex data issues clearly and simply.
  • Innovative: You have an affinity for new technologies and aren’t afraid to challenge and improve existing processes.
  • Collaboration: You are a connector, both within your team and organization and with external stakeholders.
