We are looking for a manager for our new Operations Department, which combines Food & Beverage & Hospitality, Finance, Facilities, HR, and the Executive Secretariat.
Driven by a passion for service and efficiency, you and your team are responsible for both the “backstage” and “front-of-house” operations of the theater, ensuring that artistic processes can thrive while the audience feels at home. You are hospitable and enterprising, identify and capitalize on opportunities for process improvement, and motivate and bring people together. As a member of the management team, you contribute to an inspiring and innovative organization.
Het Nationale Theater is a national theater organization with three theaters of its own in The Hague: the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui, and Zaal 3. We see the theater as the place to explore our current society and share the stories we encounter with our audience. For us, theater is a vibrant house of imagination and connection, a house that opens its doors to everyone and gives space to all voices. Each year, we create multiple productions for youth (under the HNTjong banner) and for adults, program over 800 performances, and welcome 450,000 visitors in The Hague and across the country.
In our productions, we work with experienced directors and actors from our ensemble, but we also provide opportunities for young actors and creators. We love innovative ways to produce theater and present it to our audience. For example, the Education & Interaction department gives young people and adults a platform to discover a new side of themselves, and HNTonbeperkt does everything in its power to ensure that a disability, whether visible or invisible, is not a barrier to coming to the theater. We are radically friendly, friendly and radical, constantly curious, active, and engaged.
Who are we looking for?
- Hospitality and a commitment to service are in your DNA. The National Theater strives for “radical kindness.” You embody this core value and, together with your team, put it into practice—both for our audiences (Food & Beverage & Reception) and within our own organization (Finance, Facilities, HR, Executive Office, and IT), as well as with external partners.
- As a manager, you have already proven yourself in a similar role. You are a motivator who seeks to foster cohesion and encourages collaboration, both within your department and with other departments and external partners.
- You understand that entrepreneurship is an essential part of the profession: you have a strong business sense and are committed to running a profitable hospitality business.
- You’re eager to help shape this new role and department and to proactively involve your colleagues in the process.
- You have an affinity for the performing arts and for the city of The Hague.
The National Theater aims to be a theater of and for the entire country. To enrich our organization and our programming for the public, we are constantly seeking new perspectives. We hope that you, in whatever way you can, will contribute to the diverse organization we aspire to be.
What will you be doing?
- As a manager, you will oversee the Food & Beverage & Reception, Finance, Facilities, HR, and Executive Secretariat departments, for which you will also be responsible for budgeting. You will support the department heads in your cluster in their daily operations and ensure innovation and the effective execution of HR tasks.
- You will be part of the Management Team, working to implement our ambitious multi-year strategic plan, as established by the executive directors and artistic directors. The Business Director is your direct supervisor, and you will work closely with them.
- Together with the Programming Manager, you are responsible for safeguarding the identity of our various theaters. You ensure that our audience reception policy is clearly visible throughout the venues.
- You will work closely with two key external partners: together with our caterer, you will oversee the provision of lunch, dinner, and snacks for employees, players, visitors, and event rentals. Together with our IT provider, you will ensure a clear and state-of-the-art IT policy.
What we offer you:
The National Theater has a staff of 180. You will serve as the manager of the Operations cluster, which comprises five departments with more than 50 colleagues. You will work in an organization that aims to create the most magnificent productions at the forefront of developments in the theater world. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Theater and Dance.
