More about this organization
Actors on stage during the applause following a theater performance; the audience in the background claps enthusiastically.

We are looking for a manager for our new Operations Department, which brings together Food & Beverage & Hospitality, Finance, Facilities, HR, and the Executive Secretariat. Driven by a passion for service and efficiency, you and your team are responsible for both the “back of the house” of the theater—ensuring that artistic processes can flourish—and the “front of the house,” making the audience feel at home. You are hospitable and enterprising, identify and capitalize on opportunities for process improvement, and motivate and connect people. As a member of the management team, you contribute to an inspiring and innovative organization.

The National Theater is a national theater organization with three theaters of its own in The Hague: the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui, and Zaal 3. We see the theater as the ultimate place to explore our times and share the stories we encounter with our audience. Theater as a vibrant hub of imagination and connection, a space that welcomes everyone and gives voice to all perspectives. We produce several shows each year, for young people (under the HNTjong banner) and for adults, program over 800 performances, and welcome 450,000 visitors in The Hague and across the country.

In our productions, we work with experienced directors and actors from our ensemble, but we also give young actors and creators a chance to shine. We love innovative ways of producing and presenting theater to our audience. The Education & Interaction department gives young people and adults a platform to discover a new side of themselves. HNTonbeperkt does everything in its power to ensure that a disability, whether visible or invisible, is not a barrier to coming to the theater. We are radically friendly, friendly and radical, constantly curious, active, and engaged.

Who are we looking for?

  • Hospitality and a service-oriented mindset are second nature to you. The National Theater strives for “radical kindness.” You embody this core value and, together with your team, put it into practice both for the public (Food & Beverage & Reception) and for the organization itself and external partners (Finance, Facilities, HR, Executive Office, and IT).
  • As a manager, you have already proven yourself in a similar role. You are a motivator who seeks to foster cohesion and encourages collaboration, both within your department and with other departments and external partners.
  • You understand that entrepreneurship is an essential part of the profession: you have a keen business sense and are committed to running a profitable hospitality business.
  • You’re eager to help shape this new role and department and to proactively involve your colleagues in the process.
  • You have an affinity for the performing arts and for the city of The Hague.
  • The National Theater aims to be a theater of and for the entire country. To enrich our organization and our programming for the public, we are constantly seeking new perspectives. We hope that you, in whatever way you can, will contribute to the diverse organization we aspire to be.

What will you be doing?

  • As a manager, you will oversee the Food & Beverage & Reception, Finance, Facilities, HR, and Executive Secretariat departments, for which you will also be responsible for budgeting. You will support the department heads in your cluster in their day-to-day operations. You will drive innovation and ensure the effective execution of HR tasks.
  • You will be part of the Management Team. Together, you will shape the implementation of our ambitious multi-year strategic plan, as established by the executive directors and artistic directors. The Business Director is your direct supervisor, with whom you will work closely.
  • As the Programming Manager, you are responsible for safeguarding the identity of our various theaters. You ensure that our audience-focused policies are clearly visible throughout.
  • You will work with two key external partners: together with our caterer, you will provide lunch, dinner, and snacks for employees, performers, visitors, and event rentals. Together with our IT provider, you will ensure a clear and state-of-the-art IT policy.

What we offer you:

The National Theater has a staff of 180. You will become the manager of the Operations cluster, which comprises five departments with more than 50 colleagues. You will work in an organization that aims to be at the forefront of developments in the theater world and to collaborate on creating wonderful productions. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Theater and Dance.
