The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Founded in 1638 as the Hortus Medicus, over the course of four centuries it has grown into a magnificent botanical garden with a thriving collection. It is a green oasis in the heart of the city, featuring a collection of approximately 4,000 species from five continents. The Hortus is an independent foundation that generates its income from ticket sales, food and beverage services, venue rentals, and the gift shop, and receives an annual contribution from the City of Amsterdam. It is also supported by a large and loyal Friends Association. Activities and events are organized throughout the year. This and more is made possible by the dedication of approximately 65 enthusiastic staff members and 80 volunteers.
