More about this organization
A historic greenhouse with a glass facade and dome located on the waterfront, surrounded by greenery in the Amsterdam Botanical Garden.

The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Founded in 1638 as the Hortus Medicus, over the course of four centuries it has grown into a magnificent botanical garden with a thriving collection. It is a green oasis in the heart of the city, featuring a collection of approximately 4,000 species from five continents. The Hortus is an independent foundation that generates its income from ticket sales, food and beverage services, venue rentals, and the gift shop, and receives an annual contribution from the City of Amsterdam. It is also supported by a large and loyal Friends Association. Activities and events are organized throughout the year. This and more is made possible by the dedication of approximately 65 enthusiastic staff members and 80 volunteers.

The Supervisory Board advises the director/manager and oversees the director/manager’s policies and the general affairs of the Hortus. The Supervisory Board consists of seven members, one of whom is a member of the board of the Friends Association.
