DutchCulture is the knowledge and networking organization for international cultural cooperation. Where culture, media, and heritage transcend borders, DutchCulture brings people, organizations, knowledge, and cultures together. We do this primarily for the Dutch cultural sector and embassies worldwide. In addition, we work for various government agencies and the international cultural sector. DutchCulture is a dynamic and international work environment in the heart of Amsterdam, where some forty passionate cultural professionals—with diverse backgrounds, nationalities, ages, skin colors, genders, sexual orientations, and religious beliefs—are engaged in various ways with international cultural exchange and cooperation.

About the Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board currently consists of five members, including one chairperson. The Supervisory Board operates in accordance with the eight principles of the Cultural Governance Code and has four roles:

• Role of the regulator

• Role of the employer

• Role of a sparring partner

• Role as an ambassador for the organization

The Supervisory Board supports the executive director in the performance of her duties.

Core Values

The core values of the Supervisory Board are:

  • Trust: The relationship between the executive directors and the Supervisory Board is based on trust and openness. However, trust does not mean that the Supervisory Board cannot be critical
  • mission-driven: oversight is based on the shared vision and mission of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director regarding the organization’s social and artistic objectives. In this process, all interests are carefully weighed
  • Equality: The Executive Director and the Supervisory Board are equals and complement each other based on their respective roles, expertise, and competencies
  • Generosity: Supervisors always go above and beyond what is expected of them. They are generous and loyal to the organization

Meetings

The Supervisory Board meets four times a year for regular meetings. In addition, the Supervisory Board regularly engages with stakeholders, works on professional development, and explores topics that are important to DutchCulture.

Committees

There are two committees within the Supervisory Board:

  • the compensation committee, which is responsible for employer-related matters
  • the audit committee, which prepares the financial aspects of the oversight

General requirements for members of the Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board is composed in such a way that all members can act independently and critically toward one another, the managing director, and any special interests. All members of the Supervisory Board:

  • have diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise; the aim is to achieve balance and diversity (the Supervisory Board represents a good mix of sex, gender, and (bi)cultural backgrounds)
  • are independent and have no personal or conflicting interests
  • have an interest in culture and international relations
  • are able to assess the general and business policies of the organization in broad terms
  • have enough time to carry out their task

The members of the Supervisory Board collectively possess a relevant network and specific expertise, complementing one another in the areas of:

  • politics and government
  • Finance and Operations
  • international cultural cooperation
  • art and culture
  • business community
  • International/Social Relations

Reimbursement

The members of the Supervisory Board serve in an unpaid capacity. However, they are entitled to reimbursement of any (reasonable) expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.
