The Gerrit Rietveld Academy (GRA) is a

a small, independent, internationally oriented college of fine arts

art and design. The GRA consists of the Rietveld Academy (bachelor's

education, divided into 13 departments) and the Sandberg Institute

(master's programs, divided into 7 departments), the Art and Public Research Group

Space and 23 workshops. The academy has approximately 850 students and 130

students. The students come from 55 different countries, and 67% of

The students are from outside the Netherlands.

The academy is characterized by an inquiry-based and experimental approach to art education, in which professors, lecturers, workshop staff, students, and administrative staff work together to shape the content and structure of the education and research programs. Diversity and inclusion, ecology, and sustainability are key priorities for the GRA and thus serve as guiding principles for the actions of the members of the academy community. A defining feature of the academy is its decentralized management philosophy and the relatively autonomous working methods of the departments (specializations).

Day-to-day management is the responsibility of the Executive Board (CvB), which, supported by the Management Team (MT), reports to the Supervisory Board (RvT). The academic programs are supported by a large number of departments and administrative units, such as Financial Administration, Student Affairs, IT, Facilities Management, Public Rietveld, and the Human Resources department. The academy has approximately 300 employees.

Role of the Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board oversees the performance of duties and the exercise of powers by the Executive Board and advises the Board. In fulfilling its duties, the Supervisory Board focuses on the interests of the university. In doing so, it balances the relevant interests of the agencies, organizations, and individuals associated with the university in accordance with the university’s vision and mission. The Supervisory Board is responsible for the quality of its own performance.

The Code of Good Governance for Universities of Applied Sciences provides the framework for the Council’s operations and for the governance of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in general.

Composition of the Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board consists of at least five members. A member of the Supervisory Board may serve on the Board for a maximum of two four-year terms. The members are appointed by the Board; one member is appointed upon the recommendation of the Employee Participation Council.

General Profile

The Supervisory Board is composed in such a way that its members can act independently and critically toward one another and the Executive Board. The Board strives to ensure sufficient diversity in its composition. The Board ensures that its composition is always such that it can properly fulfill its duties. Each member:

  • has an affinity for the visual arts, design, and the unique character of art education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy;
  • has extensive administrative experience and/or administrative skills;
  • has sufficient time and opportunity to attend the Council’s meetings and to participate in any other consultations with relevant stakeholders;
  • serves in a personal capacity, performs his duties independently and without interference, and has no direct interests in the college.

We are currently recruiting a member of the Supervisory Board who will also serve as chair of the Audit Committee.

General

The chair of the Audit Committee is an experienced (former) financial manager or a certified public accountant with experience in the education sector. This person is able to evaluate financial plans, budgets, and accountability reports on their merits and assess them against previously established guidelines and budgets. The Chair of the Audit Committee has knowledge of education financing and can act as a sparring partner for the Executive Board and the university’s financial management. The Chair of the Audit Committee is able to build a good working relationship with the Director of Operations, the Controller, and the external auditor, can act as their client, and possesses sufficient financial and economic knowledge to assess the implementation of the auditor’s recommendations.

Specific areas of expertise

  • Knowledge and experience in higher (vocational) education;
  • broad financial expertise, including knowledge of annual reporting and the guidelines for annual reporting in the education sector (RJ 660);
  • general knowledge of business operations;
  • able to understand the financial aspects of a university of applied sciences (such as the T-2 principle, publicly funded and non-publicly funded students, the allocation model, the importance of educational logistics, and cost accounting in the context of the Policy Rule on Investing Public Funds in Private Activities and Housing) and to ask critical questions about them;
  • experience with risk management;
  • familiarity with project management in the context of research activities at the academy;
  • an affinity for digitalization;
  • willingness to serve as a sounding board for the Executive Board, the Director of Operations, and the Controller on a regular basis, even outside of the regular Audit Committee meetings.

Remuneration

The Board of Trustees meets an average of six times a year, and depending on current issues within and outside the academy, members serve on committees. The annual compensation for regular duties as a member of the Board of Trustees is €2,890. A fee of €645 is paid for serving on a committee.

Diversity

The Gerrit Rietveld Academy aims to achieve broader representation among its staff, students, partners, and programs that reflects the diversity of the city. Anyone who believes they can contribute to this effort is strongly encouraged to respond.
