The Amsterdam Museum brings the history of Amsterdam to life and offers insight into the city’s identity; the museum challenges residents and visitors to deepen their relationship with the city . We do this through a diverse public program (exhibitions, events, and education) both at our locations and online. Innovation, hospitality, diversity, (international) collaboration, and knowledge sharing are of paramount importance. The museum welcomes approximately 500,000 visitors annually across its various locations (Huis Willet-Holthuysen on Herengracht and the Amsterdam Museum on the Amstel). The Amsterdam Museum also programs and presents exhibitions at other locations in Amsterdam, in collaboration with various partners in Nieuw-West and Zuidoost. The Amsterdam Museum is responsible for the management and preservation of the City of Amsterdam’s historical collection, conducts research on it, and selectively expands the collection. As an A-bis institution, the Amsterdam Museum is included in the City of Amsterdam’s Arts Plan.
Together with the City of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Museum is preparing for the renovation of the museum building on Kalverstraat (Burgerweeshuis). As a result, the Amsterdam Museum has temporarily relocated its exhibitions to the Hermitage building on the Amstel and its offices to Herengracht.
