Founded in 1926, the Amsterdam Museum is an innovative city museum that invites residents and visitors to Amsterdam to become co-owners of our city. Together, we celebrate the city, but we also address its shortcomings and explore ways to improve it.
We present exhibitions and programs covering a wide range of urban topics. Through these, we share knowledge, showcase art and heritage, and tell relevant stories—both historical and contemporary—that shape the city in all its forms. We do this at our locations in the historic city center: the Amsterdam Museum wing on the Amstel,
Willet-Holthuysen House. And soon also in the fully renovated Burgerweeshuis Complex. Of course, together with all our partners at locations throughout the city.
The museum manages a collection of more than 100,000 objects, most of which are owned by the city of Amsterdam and, by extension, its residents. The Amsterdam Museum ensures that the collection remains sustainably available as a source for new exhibitions, research, and inspiration. In addition, we continue to expand the collection through participatory collecting projects, in which intangible heritage and digitally collected stories play an increasingly important role. Finally, we believe it is important to collaborate with contemporary creators through new commissions and projects.
Co-creation and participation are central to our collaborations, and we therefore work on the basis of equality. Together with our partners, we build connections and share our knowledge. Through this initiative, the museum assumes its role as a network organization within the urban ecosystem, as well as at the national and international levels.
The Amsterdam Museum is listed as an A-bis institution in the City of Amsterdam’s Arts Plan. Together with the City of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Museum is preparing for the renovation of the museum building on Kalverstraat (Burgerweeshuis). As a result, the Amsterdam Museum has temporarily relocated its exhibitions to the Hermitage building on the Amstel and its offices to Herengracht.
The Amsterdam Museum is a foundation led by an executive director. The Supervisory Board provides the board of directors with advice and support, oversees the broad outlines of policy, strategy, and finances, and acts as the employer for the executive director.
Members are appointed for a term of four years and may subsequently be appointed for a second and final term of four years. Appointments are approved by the Municipal Executive of the City of Amsterdam.
The Amsterdam Museum’s Board of Trustees meets as often as necessary and at least four times a year.
This is an unpaid position. However, members are eligible for a set volunteer stipend. Members of the Board also receive free admission to all exhibitions and public programs at the Amsterdam Museum, and are regularly invited to openings and other special events.
