More about this organization
The white building of the Maritime Museum on the waterfront, with a historic sailing ship in front of it under a blue sky.

The Maritime Museum explores and highlights how the maritime world and society are inextricably linked. Together, we make history relevant for today and tomorrow. We demonstrate how the maritime past continues to shape our daily lives and how the sea and shipping influence current and future social issues. We do this through our exceptional collection, innovative narratives, and a diverse public program. In recent years, the museum has undergone a transformation and strives to incorporate inclusive and multifaceted narratives into all its activities.

Starting in 2025, the Maritime Museum will operate under a new organizational structure. The board consists of a general director and a business director. The Supervisory Board currently has seven members; together, they oversee the museum’s transparency, governance, and strategic direction. The Cultural Governance Code, the Diversity & Inclusion Code, and the Fair Practice Code serve as guiding principles in this regard.

Due to the expiration of one of the members’ terms in April 2026, we are seeking a:

Member of the Supervisory Board and Chair of the Audit Committee

Who are we looking for?

The Board is looking for a team player with vision, strategic thinking, and a broad commitment to social issues. We expect you to be proactive, reflective, and able to contribute to a diverse Board. As chair of the Audit Committee, you will serve as the Board’s point of contact for finance, risk management, and internal control. A sense of humor and the ability to keep things in perspective are a plus.

What are we looking for?

  • Experience in a supervisory role and an understanding of the division of responsibilities between management and the board of supervisors;
  • A proven track record in finance at the executive level (CFO or equivalent);
  • Experience in overseeing risk management, internal controls, and audits;
  • Experience in a leadership role;
  • The time and experience to review the board’s policies and provide advice;
  • Knowledge of the aforementioned codes;
  • Willingness to serve as an ambassador and, when appropriate, to leverage your network on behalf of the museum.

What do we offer?

  • A unique opportunity to contribute to a leading and inspiring museum that is deeply rooted in society and connects themes from the maritime past—such as sustainability, migration, climate, and diversity—to current issues.
  • The Council meets four times a year on Fridays from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Audit Committee generally meets three times a year. In addition, there is an annual strategy meeting held off-site, which includes an internal evaluation of the Council’s own performance. The atmosphere within the Council is informal, and relations among its members and with the Board of Directors are good.
  • The time commitment for a member is expected to be one day per month. Council members are entitled to claim an expense allowance of €500 per year, plus travel expenses.
  • Invitations to events such as exhibition openings, lectures, and debates.

Interested?

You can apply until Sunday, February 22, 2026, using the application button below.

If you have any questions, please contact Alvin Williams, Member of the Supervisory Board, via Ellen Wybenga, Secretary, at 020-5232260

Interviews for this position will take place between Monday, March 2, and Friday, March 20, 2026.

The Maritime Museum aims to be a safe and inclusive home for everyone. We view diversity in perspectives and backgrounds as a strength, including within the Board of Trustees. The museum is made up of professionals with diverse areas of expertise, united by a sense of commitment, curiosity, and a shared passion for the water. We also welcome members to the Board of Trustees who wish to contribute to this mission with an open mind and drawing on their own experiences.
