Verbindion Nieuwegein promotes sports, physical activity, and swimming skills in the municipality of Nieuwegein. It does this by operating the Merwestein Sports and Events Complex and by employing community sports coaches through SportID Nieuwegein. In this way, Verbindion actively contributes to the vitality of Nieuwegein’s community.
Merwestein is currently undergoing extensive renovations to prepare it for the future. Verbindion is investing in a sustainable and future-proof complex that will better meet the needs of visitors starting in mid-2026. You can find more information about Verbindion’s direction and strategy here.
Verbindion is led by a managing director. The Supervisory Board oversees the functioning of the entire organization, including the continuity of operations, strategic objectives, and the social and commercial performance of Verbindion. In addition, the Supervisory Board serves as a strategic sparring partner and acts as the employer of the managing director. The Supervisory Board operates in accordance with the “Governance Code.” The agreements are set forth in the regulations accompanying the organization’s articles of incorporation.
The Supervisory Board currently consists of four members, each with their own area of focus. Due to the recent resignation of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board—who stepped down after accepting a position that is incompatible with his role at Verbindion—a vacancy has arisen on the Supervisory Board effective immediately.
We are seeking a new member of the supervisory board with a political and administrative background. You have extensive experience in local government or the civil service and possess strategic insight into the functioning of the public sector. You have a strong administrative or managerial background, for example as a municipal secretary, (policy) director, or department head. You have an inside-out understanding of how municipal decision-making works and understand the interaction between the civil service, the executive board, and the council. You are well-versed in policy development, budget processes, and public accountability. You understand how political, social, and administrative interests influence one another and know how to stay the course within that dynamic.
Ideally, you have experience with administrative communication with the council, residents, and partners. You know how to build support for sensitive issues and act with care within the democratic process. With your experience and analytical skills, you make a valuable contribution to independent and socially conscious oversight. Experience as a member of a supervisory board is desirable but not required.
You have a good understanding of the division of roles between oversight and management, and as a sparring partner, you know when to be critical and when to offer constructive input. You are a person of integrity, independent, and capable of fulfilling your role with a sense of responsibility and commitment. You possess the ability to reflect and are a connector: you can bring different perspectives together and take the social context into account in your decision-making. You have sufficient availability to perform the role effectively and experience in chairing meetings. An affinity for or ambition to eventually grow into the role of chairperson is a plus.
At least six meetings are held annually between the Supervisory Board and the CEO. The Supervisory Board also meets with the shareholder (the municipality of Nieuwegein) at least twice a year. During these meetings, the Supervisory Board monitors the policy decisions that the management makes and/or intends to make. Due to the ongoing revitalization of the real estate and the area development, it is expected that the Supervisory Board may be called upon more frequently. This means that consultations may occur more frequently during this period.
