Personal Profile: Member of the Supervisory Board with a background in public housing and real estate

As of January 1, 2023, a position will become available on the Supervisory Board for a member with a background in public housing or real estate. Area

Area manages over 8,700 rental units in Uden, Veghel, and the surrounding villages. We want you to be able to live well here, in a pleasant environment where residents look out for one another. Area is here for people who depend on a housing association in the housing market: low-income individuals, first-time renters, permit holders, and people with disabilities. We believe that as a resident, you should be able to stay in your familiar surroundings—whether living independently or with care. Where necessary, we renovate or sell homes and build new houses and residential complexes. We do this in a sustainable way, in line with the needs of our residents. We know what we’re capable of and what others excel at. So we join forces with people and organizations that share our vision: a vibrant and social environment. Will you join Area? Together, we bring living to life.

Challenges for the coming period

The world is changing rapidly. A lot is happening. As a housing authority, we feel the direct impact of these changes. Think of global warming, the new housing law, the housing shortage, and the evolving needs of different resident groups.

In its strategic plan, Area anticipates this with the following guiding principles:

  1. Vibrant neighborhoods
  2. Living in a green setting
  3. Circular business practices
  4. Consciously working together more effectively.

The Board of Directors

The Supervisory Board consists of five members, including the chairperson. Appointments are made in accordance with the articles of incorporation. In doing so, the board strives for diversity and a balanced distribution of seats between men and women. The Supervisory Board is responsible for overseeing the management’s conduct and the general affairs of Area, and for advising the management.

The Supervisory Board also acts as the employer of the Executive Board.

The Supervisory Board has two committees: the Compensation Committee and the Audit Committee.

General Profile of the Board of Supervisors

The following is important for the proper functioning of the Supervisory Board:

  • The Supervisory Board and its individual members may assess the quality of the management by evaluating the management’s policies and decisions in light of the expectations of the housing association’s stakeholders, including tenants, municipalities, and other civil society organizations.
  • Supervision is exercised, in part, through the approval of management decisions. The decisions that the Supervisory Board is required to approve are specified in the articles of incorporation.
  • The Supervisory Board should consist of generalists who together form a multidisciplinary team, thereby enabling them to fulfill their collective responsibility. This requires knowledge and experience in a number of policy areas, which are described below.
  • Because societal expectations are highly complex, diversity must be a factor in the composition of the Supervisory Board, in addition to the substantive policy areas.
  • The Supervisory Board should function as a team, combining a consensus on a shared direction with a critical individual perspective. Members discuss the organization’s direction with the CEO and among themselves in an open-minded manner. In doing so, the Supervisory Board applies its own supervisory framework.
  • Given the role of the Supervisory Board, its members must be able to analyze decisions from a broader perspective (a “helicopter view”) and distinguish between primary and secondary issues; this requires a level of education and experience equivalent to at least a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Members of the Supervisory Board must combine analytical skills with empathy and intuition, and must be able to articulate both.
  • Experience in supervisory roles is preferred.
  • An advisory role implies that the Supervisory Board serves not only as a sounding board for the board of directors on substantive matters, but also with regard to developments in the sector and, in particular, in the community that the foundation serves. They must be able to pick up on signals from society and assess their relevance to policy. A broad interest in social issues is essential for this.
  • Given the social and political environment in which the housing association operates, this also requires an understanding of administrative decision-making processes and strategic decision-making processes.
  • The aim is to appoint members to the Supervisory Board from both the business sector and the nonprofit sector.
  • Asking the right questions is more important than giving the right answers.
  • Given the current composition of the Supervisory Board, preference is given to individuals with ties to the field.

Compensation and availability: Thisposition is compensated with an annual stipend (in accordancewiththe “Professional Guidelines for the Compensation of Supervisory Board Members”).

The Supervisory Board meets 8 to 10 times a year for its regular Monday meetings. In addition, there will be a number of other meetings and/or activities at which attendance is required.
