Railway Museum: Bridging the Past, Present, and Future

The name “Railway Museum” brings a smile to many faces. Whether it’s a child seeing a train for the first time, a parent taking an exciting ride with their family, or a business gathering at our unique venue—everyone has a memory of visiting the Railway Museum. These memories connect generations, groups, and diverse communities.

The Railway Museum is located in the heart of Utrecht, a city that has served as a transportation hub for decades thanks to its extensive rail network. The museum is not only a place of remembrance, but also a space that brings society together through the universal theme of travel. We offer a wide range of opportunities to share stories, connect people, and engage communities. Our museum does not present singular narratives, but rather a platform for the many perspectives that the theme of travel encompasses.

What are we looking for?

As Head of Audience Engagement, you are the strategic force behind the museum’s audience-focused activities. Together with your team, you develop and implement museum concepts for various target groups, ranging from the general public to educational groups. You ensure that the Railway Museum continues to expand its role as a socially engaged and dynamic player, both online and offline. You prioritize quality and entrepreneurship.

We are looking for a dedicated leader with plenty of energy and strong opinions who is eager to help shape the future of the Railway Museum.

What are we looking for in a candidate?

  • Marketing experience: You have experience in (online) marketing and know how to increase the museum’s visibility and engagement;
  • Relevant experience in development: You have a proven track record of success in applying for grants, securing sponsorships, conducting fundraising campaigns, and managing bequests;
  • Museum concept development: You have relevant experience in developing museum concepts for diverse audiences, and you are able to think from the outside in;
  • Networking and Entrepreneurship: You have an extensive network both within and outside the cultural sector and are willing to leverage and connect this network for the benefit of the museum.
  • Management experience: You have experience leading a team and a proven track record of working as part of a Management Team (MT).

What does the Railway Museum have to offer?

  • A fun and challenging job in a unique setting for at least 32 hours per week. Days and hours are flexible and can be arranged
  • A competitive salary, depending on work experience, ranging from €6,661.94 to €8,329.06 gross per month based on a 40-hour workweek
  • No travel allowance, but free admission to the Railway Museum for your partner (and children) and a Museum Pass
  • An excellent pension plan
  • The Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Recreation Sector applies

Why work at the Railway Museum?

As Head of Public Engagement, you’ll have an impact on a very diverse group of visitors, because the Railway Museum has something to offer everyone. You’ll seek out the best ways to reach this broad audience while also shaping the museum’s social impact in the areas of accessibility, sustainability, and innovation.

Are you the innovative leader we're looking for?

Are you ready to help take the Railway Museum to the next level? We look forward to meeting you and exploring together how you can contribute to the Railway Museum’s continued success. The Railway Museum is being assisted in this process by the executive search firm Colourful People.

You can apply by uploading your resume and cover letter (both in PDF format) by January 13, 2025, at the latest, via www.colourfulpeople.nl.

For direct contact or questions about this position, please contact René F. Burgler, Esq., senior partner at Colourful People, at r.burgler@colourfulpeople.nl or by phone at 06 28 57 54 36.
