The Rijksmuseum tells the story of 800 years of Dutch history. We do this through a collection of over 1 million objects, exhibitions, and educational programs. As Head of Audience Engagement, you’ll work with a close-knit team of six colleagues to fulfill a mission: to bring the collection to life and make it relevant to as wide an audience as possible. How do we connect the world of today and tomorrow with our artifacts?
What will you be doing?
No two days are the same. Together with the Head of Public & Education and the deputy heads, you’ll set the strategic direction for the future. You’ll develop annual plans with your team and prepare the budget. And this is just a small sample of the many tasks you’ll be juggling simultaneously. You’re a knowledgeable, expert, and inspiring leader who works with a forward-looking approach to build an innovative, world-class education department. You’ll do this by, among other things:
- Managing your team of six employees. By making the right choices, you stay focused on what matters most and keep an eye on the workload.
- To collaborate on the creation of educational (digital) products and programs, such as museum exhibits, audio, video, and guided tours.
- Help shape the future of the museum, including the Art School.
Working at the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum belongs to and is for everyone. Led by the Head of Audience & Education, a team of more than 110 colleagues works every day to inspire people’s minds and hearts with our collection. Our goal is to use our collection and stories to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.
We are at the heart of society. This is reflected, for example, in our exhibitions, programming, educational products and programs, and our partners. We curate and showcase our collection from multiple perspectives and connect our objects and stories with as many in-person and virtual visitors as possible. We strive for diversity within our teams to achieve this.
What do you bring to the table?
We’re eager to learn more about you and the skills you’ll bring to our team. You combine extensive experience in developing educational products and programming for the public with strong, supportive leadership. You’re innovative and creative, and you can make quick decisions while keeping an eye on the long-term strategy. You’re able to deliver on time and within budget.
In addition, you will definitely have:
- Bachelor’s-level academic ability and Master’s degree in art history/history.
- Experience in strategic policy development.
- 3 years of relevant management experience.
- Experience in developing various (museum) educational resources.
- A knack for connecting with and collaborating with (external) stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
What do you get in return?
- A gross monthly salary ranging from €4,070 to €5,668 per month based on a 36-hour workweek (scale 12 of the museum collective bargaining agreement).
- 8% vacation pay and 3.4% year-end bonus.
- A one-year contract with the possibility of renewal.
- The flexibility to alternate between working from home and working in the office, as agreed, including a budget to set up your home office.
- Full reimbursement of public transportation costs for trips of 5 km or more (up to a maximum of €345). The costs you incur when you park your bike in a secure bike rack at the station are also fully reimbursed.
- After your probationary period, you will receive a Museum Year Card that grants you unlimited access to 450 museums in the Netherlands. You are always welcome at the Rijksmuseum (during opening hours) with one guest.
- Participation in various events and sports activities.
