Minerva Academy, part of Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, is seeking a Head of the Autonomous Visual Arts Program (0.6–0.8 FTE).

The Bachelor’s program in Autonomous Visual Arts is a forward-thinking program with an excellent accreditation (2020). The program has a strong profile and is constantly evolving, with the curriculum given full freedom to anticipate the ever-changing world of contemporary visual arts.

What will you be doing?

As Head of the Autonomous Visual Arts program, you will be responsible for leading the program and a team of 30 staff members who support 200 students from more than 50 nationalities and cultures. You will collaborate with the course leader and the teaching team, the curriculum committee, and the professional field to further shape and refine the curriculum, artistic research, and the program’s vision. You will develop and implement strategic policies and translate ambitions into concrete plans, with a focus on the quality of education and the well-being of the team. You will also draw up the program budget, the multi-year investment budget, and the staffing plan, and manage relevant (project) budgets.

Each department head is responsible for one or more school-wide policy areas and is a member of the management team at Academie Minerva. We are focused on making the organization future-proof, with greater agility and collaboration between teams, and better positioning on broad themes such as flexibility, research, and inclusivity. The management team operates on the principle of shared leadership. This requires flexibility and collaboration, as well as experimentation with new organizational models and working methods. The Head of Autonomous Visual Arts will focus primarily on further professionalizing the team and working together to promote inclusivity.

Who are we looking for?

You are sociable, possess strong leadership skills, and have a background in the arts. You have experience in both process management and social management. You are a highly capable communicator and coach and can identify and address a wide range of issues related to the dynamics of higher education. You have the ability to understand complex and broad policy areas and to propose and defend ideas, concepts, and policy plans.

  • A completed master's degree.
  • Work experience in a similar management position.
  • Strong skills in educational administration.
  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing (inclusive) policies.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary projects.
  • An active network within the arts.
  • Knowledge of developments in the cultural and artistic sector.
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English.
  • Willingness to commit to the Groningen region.

Academie Minervais a school for visual arts, design, and pop culture, offering programs in Visual Arts, Design, Teacher Training in Visual Arts & Design, FMI Master’s Programs, and the Master’s in Art Education in Groningen, and a program in Pop Culture in Leeuwarden. Academie Minerva is affiliated with the Knowledge Center for Art & Society.

Terms of Employment

  • A permanent position starting with a one-year contract. Start date: as soon as possible.
  • A salary ranging from a minimum of €5,492 to a maximum of €6,997 gross per month for full-time employment, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for higher professional education (Manager D, Scale 13).
  • An 8% vacation bonus, a regular year-end bonus of 8.3%, and up to 53 days of vacation.
