The Academy of Theatre and Dance is part of ArtEZ University of the Arts and is located in Arnhem and Zwolle. The academy encourages students to create work within their chosen discipline that is connected to the social context. This helps our students grow into active, critical artists with a mission. The academy offers training programs for artist-educators in theater, dance, and media that directly address current themes and urgent social issues. Artist-educators work from their artistic practice both in and outside of schools, with people of all ages and communities, always grounded in the context and the stories that need to be told there.
A new generation of artists who bring people together
The Artist-Educator in Theater & Media program trains a new generation of creators and educators who make change possible. They connect communities, challenge the status quo, and use art to bring about social and artistic change. Graduates are more than just teachers: they are leaders, researchers, and ambassadors of art and culture with a mission to create a lasting impact. The program trains students to become storytellers and connectors who are firmly rooted in society. With a strong emphasis on social responsibility, equitable pedagogy, and diversity, students develop a critical perspective on arts education and current issues.
They grow into changemakers who contribute to a digitalizing, multicultural world and play an active role in shaping future policy. The program combines artistic autonomy with the ability to forge social connections and bring complex stories to light. This enables graduates to create a lasting and meaningful impact.
Navigation and connection at the heart of the program
The program emphasizes the power of art to bring social issues into the open and stimulate change in an increasingly polarized world. Students learn to navigate chaos and uncertainty and discover how art can be used as a catalyst for change. They develop skills in artistic reflection, critical thinking, and design-based inquiry. By collaborating with different disciplines and communities, they learn to formulate new questions and design creative solutions. This approach enables them to use art and education as tools for social innovation and connection.
