More about this organization
An artist dressed in white stands on stage in front of an audience in a theater with red lighting and professional lighting equipment.

An experienced leader with vision and the ability to make an impact. Can you translate our mission into stories that move and connect people, from the inside out? If so , we ’d love to welcome you as we set a course together toward the theater of tomorrow.

As Head of Marketing, Communications & Sales (MC&S), you will shape—both strategically and creatively—a movement in which we are working to create a theater that is socially relevant, accessible, and visible to all residents of Utrecht.

You have a vision for this, a sense of the spirit of the times, and the ability to bring our mission to life both internally and externally. You’re someone who combines strategy with creativity, uses data to foster genuine connections, and knows how to reach audiences who don’t yet naturally feel connected to us.

About Stadsschouwburg Utrecht

Stadsschouwburg Utrecht is the vibrant theatrical heart of Utrecht and the surrounding area. We present a wide range of national and international performances across all genres. We also organize special projects, often in collaboration with other venues, festivals, and companies in Utrecht. In addition, our historic building is available for rent.

We have two theater halls (the Main Hall and the Blue Hall), a café (Mevr. Dudok), and a theater restaurant (Zindering). We welcome more than 200,000 visitors each year. We work closely with the Dutch performing arts community, and with Utrecht-based companies, festivals, and institutions in particular. We also support local Utrecht artists and are strongly committed to education and talent development. We believe it is important that everyone feels welcome. Sustainability, equality, reciprocity, and complementarity are central to this.

What will you be doing?

You will develop and implement a forward-looking strategy in which positioning, audience expansion, data-driven marketing, and inclusive communication go hand in hand. You will translate our mission into compelling stories, campaigns, and digital solutions that truly resonate with people. You will do this

as the manager of the Marketing & Communications and Front Office teams. You

works closely with the Marketing & Communications coordinators and

Front Office.

You will be ultimately responsible for:

  • The integrated marketing, communications, and sales strategy: You will develop a forward-looking vision that supports our mission and translate it into concrete plans that increase audience reach, visibility, and impact.
  • Strengthening our brand identity, both locally and nationally: you’ll ensure consistency in our visual identity and tone of voice, and help clarify and deepen our brand message for different audiences.
  • Increasing our visibility and ticket sales through smart CRM and segmentation strategies: you use data and customer insights to target specific audiences more effectively, optimize campaigns, and surprise visitors with relevant offers.
  • Leveraging digital innovation, AI, and audience data: you’ll experiment with new technologies to personalize communication, improve processes, and engage new target audiences.
  • Creative campaigns with social impact: You’ll develop storytelling and campaigns that not only draw people to the theater but also move them, bring them together, and spark conversation about today’s issues.
  • A strong team (approximately 17 full-time equivalents, consisting of 7 back-office and 12 front-office staff) that you lead with courage, care, and direction: you are an inclusive leader who builds trust, fosters growth, and provides clear guidelines. Together, you work to create an open and learning-oriented work culture.

What do you bring to the table?

You are a strong, experienced leader with a clear vision for marketing and social change. You know how to combine strategy with creativity, data with intuition, and leadership with collaboration. You have ultimate responsibility

for the entire field of marketing, communications, and sales, and provides

guidance on the course and implementation.

  • At least 6–8 years of experience in marketing/communications within sectors such as culture, media, or hospitality. You have worked in environments focused on experience, audience engagement, and brand positioning, and you have demonstrated a proven track record of making an impact.
  • Experience in brand development, digital marketing, and organizational change. You understand the ins and outs of positioning and know what it takes to build a brand in a dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of CRM, audience data, AI, and innovation in marketing. You understand how data and technology can be leveraged to drive audience growth, foster loyalty, and enable personalized communication.
  • An inclusive leadership style: you build trust, recognize the value of diversity, and foster collaboration. You are a coaching leader who creates space and empowers others.
  • Experience with complex organizations and societal positioning. You have a keen understanding of administrative dynamics and the social context, and you know how to stay the course.

In addition, you are:

  • Strategic and hands-on; you move seamlessly between developing a vision and making operational decisions
  • Strong in stakeholder management; you easily switch between internal and external partners
  • Creative in concept and communication; you know how to craft stories that resonate with people and inspire them
  • Results-oriented without being rigid; you keep the goals in focus while also paying attention to the process and building support
  • Curious, eager to learn, and socially conscious; you draw your energy from movement, change, and connection
  • You don’t have to be a “traditional theater person.” It’s precisely your fresh perspective, different background, or innovative approach that can make all the difference in our next chapter.

What do we offer?

A role with significant strategic responsibility within an organization undergoing transition. You’ll have the freedom to make a meaningful impact on both the theater and the city.

A full-fledged executive position with significant influence.

In every department, we strive to promote diversity and create an environment where you can be yourself.

There is room to experiment, learn, and grow. We offer an inspiring workplace where you can contribute to an inclusive performing arts community.

You will be offered a fixed-term employment contract (one year) with the option to extend. You will receive a competitive salary commensurate with your knowledge and experience, in pay scale 9 of the Dutch Performing Arts Collective Labor Agreement (min. €4,240.00 – max. €6,225.00 for a 36-hour workweek).

In addition, there are attractive benefits, such as:

  • A travel expense policy;
  • The ability to set your own workdays and hours;
  • You get at least 25 vacation days per year, plus the hours for national holidays, so you can decide for yourself whether or not you want to take the day off on a holiday
  • You can attend many performances for free, and you can bring a guest.
