An NS employee in a dark blue shirt is pointing at some equipment while explaining something to a colleague in a technical room.

That’s why you’ll want to work as Head of Engineering at NS

  • Because you are looking for a varied management position in the engineering field.
  • Because you'll be working with a wonderful team of dedicated professionals.
  • Because you're looking for a sense of social purpose in your work.

Here’s what you’ll be doing as Head of Engineering

The Engineering department within NS Components is responsible for setting up the production processes for switch and main components, which must be delivered on time and to the required quality standards to the supply chain of NS Operations and/or NS Train Modernization.

The primary objective for our Lead Engineer is to ensure the efficient and effective planning and implementation of technical policies within the NCB business unit.

You will be the direct supervisor of a team of 18 technical specialists (engineers) divided among the Electrical, Mechanical, and Pneumatic teams. This team provides various technical services and products, including configuration information, overhaul specifications, working documents, production bills of materials, training for technicians, and/or production support. It also delivers investment proposals and specifications for required new assets.

In addition, you will provide functional leadership to the three configuration engineers.

As Head of Engineering, you will be part of the Management Team at NS Components.

As part of the Management Team, you will play a key role in translating technical challenges into the necessary work processes and (production) capacity for the medium term at the Berkel-Enschot site. To this end, you will coordinate with clients, assign work orders, and ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with client requirements.

This is where you'll be working

The NS Components Company (NCB) is a modern, fully equipped workshop that has been located in Berkel-Enschot since 2011. The NCB has approximately 200 permanent employees, who are supplemented during periods with a high volume of (modernization) projects by a flexible workforce ranging from 50 to 100 employees.

More than 45,000 train parts are reconditioned each year. NCB reconditions over 3,000 different types of components from both older and newer rolling stock models.

NCB has three main production processes: electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic engineering. These also include supporting processes such as engineering, work planning, and warehousing.

These are the job requirements

  • A completed technical degree at the associate’s or bachelor’s level, preferably supplemented with courses in business administration and/or management.
  • At least three years of relevant work experience.
  • You are a proven, successful manager who can inspire people and knows how to lead a large team to achieve results in a complex environment with tight deadlines.
  • You have a strong personality and don’t get flustered easily. You are persuasive and have excellent judgment.

As a person, you are a team player, flexible, and customer-focused. But above all, you are people-oriented, proactive, and able to handle pressure. You bring people together and know how to inspire them to achieve great results through effective collaboration.

These are the terms of employment

Working at NS means you can make a real difference in the dynamic world of sustainable mobility. You’ll help keep the Netherlands accessible to everyone. At NS, you’ll enjoy a great deal of freedom. There are plenty of opportunities for professional growth. We promise you that no two days will be the same. And as one of the best employers in the Netherlands, we have even more to offer. For this position, that includes:

  • A 3% year-end bonus, an 8% vacation allowance, and an excellent pension plan.
  • Your train travel in second class is free; you can travel in first class for a small fee.
  • Your family travels for free during off-peak hours.
