The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is regarded worldwide as one of the leading symphony orchestras. In everything we do, we strive for the highest quality! This is evident in our artistic and business activities, procedures, and communications. As a result, the orchestra can continue to present itself as a leading ensemble on the world stage. We ensure that our employees—125 musicians from 25 different countries and 50 office staff—enjoy their work. We give 125 concerts annually under the baton of top conductors such as our future chief conductor, Klaus Mäkelä.

We are looking for a:

Head of Education and Social Impact

Our new colleague is a strategic, collaborative, and artistically accomplished manager who leads our work in the areas of education, talent development, family and school programs, digital learning, and community engagement.

In this role, you will guide the next phase of our activities both outdoors and on the concert stage. You will ensure that education and social impact are visibly and meaningfully linked to the orchestra’s artistic identity, strategy, and future. You will be responsible for a diverse program offering for young musicians, children, families, schools, and communities, both locally and internationally.

The ideal candidate combines strategic insight with practical program knowledge and navigates a broad network with ease. You will work closely with management, musicians, and colleagues, and maintain strong relationships with funding organizations, partners, and community organizations.

What will you be doing?

  • You are responsible for the strategic development and implementation of the orchestra’s programs in the areas of family activities, education, talent development, digital learning, and community engagement;
  • You ensure that these programs align with the orchestra’s key strategic decisions and that they reflect the orchestra’s artistic quality and values;
  • You will ensure that these programs contribute to greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and that they strengthen the orchestra’s public role at the local, national, and international levels;
  • You know how to translate our programs into compelling stories for funders, policymakers, partners, the public, families, schools, and musicians;
  • You will work closely with other staff departments, musicians, guest artists, teachers, and partners to ensure that programs are artistically coordinated, well-prepared, and meaningful for all participants, the audience, and the orchestra;
  • You use evaluations, analyses, and feedback from participants and partners to continuously improve programs, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions regarding growth or course corrections;
  • You will lead and inspire the team and ensure that work is organized effectively. In doing so, you will establish clear priorities, responsibilities, schedules, and budgets, and you will be responsible for operational management and accountability;
  • You will be part of the senior management team and will actively contribute to the orchestra’s artistic and organizational direction, while increasing the visibility and social impact of our education, talent development, and community programs.

Who are you?

  • You have an academic level of work and thinking;
  • You have at least 3 years of experience in the cultural sector;
  • You have a thorough knowledge of orchestral and/or classical music;
  • You have proven experience in music education, talent development, audience development, community projects, and cultural participation;
  • You are skilled at combining strategic thinking with practical action, and you navigate with ease the complexities of our work with musicians, schools, families, young artists, partners, funders, and production teams;
  • You have strong project management skills, including budgeting, planning, contracting, evaluation, reporting, and cross-departmental coordination;
  • You are available full-time;
  • You can schedule your work hours flexibly as the work requires, for example, during weekend productions and the biannual RCO-Young weeks in the summer;
  • You have an excellent command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written;
  • You have strong communication skills, know how to set priorities, and are a team player who brings people together.

What do we offer you?

  • A dynamic full-time position in our Artistic Department. You’ll also work closely with colleagues from other departments, such as Marketing, Communications & Sales, Development, Human Resources, and the musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra;
  • If both parties are satisfied with the collaboration, there is the possibility of a permanent position after one year;
  • A salary ranging from a minimum of €5,945 to a maximum of €8,079 gross per month based on full-time employment, depending on your experience. In addition, you will receive an 8% vacation pay;
  • A position within an organization that offers ample opportunities for training and coaching;
  • A cell phone, a laptop, and reimbursement for working from home and travel expenses;
  • Of course, there’s plenty of room for you to attend our concerts.

How can you respond?

  • Are you excited to get started? If so, please send us your resume and cover letter by August 25 at the latest. You can email them to: vacatures@concertgebouworkest.nl.
  • The (first) interviews will take place on September 9 and September 16;
  • An assessment may be part of this procedure;
  • When you start working for us, we will ask you to provide a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG).

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra strives to ensure that its workforce reflects Dutch society and adheres to the Diversity & Inclusion Code. Job openings are explicitly open to everyone. When candidates are equally qualified, preference is given to those who enhance diversity within our organization.
