Are you the genre manager who can uphold the public broadcaster’s reputation through high-quality Dutch drama and foreign fiction?

Public broadcasting is particularly popular with the Dutch public for its high-quality drama programming. Countless films and series are etched in our collective memory and are part of our cultural heritage. To this day, our drama productions reach an audience of millions and win awards at national and international festivals. To uphold that reputation, we are seeking a Fiction Genre Manager to lead the (International) Fiction Genre Team.

About NPO
The Dutch Public Broadcasting Foundation (NPO) is the governing body of the national public broadcasting system. Its public mandate includes programming the media content, allocating budgets among the various broadcasters, promoting cooperation within the system, supporting broadcasters in the purchase and sale of programs, and conducting research on the quality and image of the radio, television, and internet platforms. NPO aims to be recognizable and meaningful to as many people as possible and therefore places great value on diversity in both its content and the people who work for the organization.

, Fiction Genre Manager at NPO, has made the transition from network management to genre management. Instead of networks, genres now serve as the starting point for programming policy. This policy follows an integrated programming approach. This allows us to respond even better and more quickly to the preferences and behavior of our audience. Ten genres make up the total programming lineup, which is scheduled coherently across all channels. Genre teams are responsible for the programming mix. They are led by genre managers, a new position within the Video Department. NPO is seeking a genre manager for the Fiction genre team.

What do we expect from you?
As a genre manager, you will lead the (foreign) fiction genre team. Together with the genre coordinator and the foreign fiction manager, you will ensure a rich mix of programming with the goal of providing high-quality, valuable, and audience-friendly fiction content for everyone. You understand what content is needed to effectively program our linear, on-demand, and online channels. For broadcasters and producers, you are the point of contact for program proposals. You work closely with colleagues from the programming department, as well as the Audio, Audience & Marketing, and Finance divisions. You also collaborate with the Strategy & Policy department and report to the Director of Video.
You are our expert in the field of fiction and actively contribute ideas regarding genre policy and the annual plan. You know how to use data analysis to identify the needs and preferences of the audience. Together with staff from the programming department, you coordinate which content we will offer and through which channel. Naturally, you are well-informed about national and international developments in the media landscape and our audience’s viewing behavior. Based on this, you also advise broadcasters on pitched proposals and verify whether they align with the programming strategy.

Who are we looking for?
Professional

As a genre manager, you are a passionate enthusiast and expert in fiction. You have sufficient experience in TV production and script reading to assess the feasibility of new productions. You are also skilled at translating social developments and trends into the potential value of productions. You know how to manage large budgets to achieve your goals. You have knowledge of programming for linear, on-demand, and online channels and are capable of strategic programming. Additionally, you possess an academic level of thinking and work and, for example, a background in theater studies, dramaturgy, and/or political science.

Personal
In this role, you must be able to communicate effectively and know how to interact with various stakeholders. You are a connecting link. You know how to motivate others based on your expertise and your enthusiasm for taking initiative. You present your arguments with respect for others and possess persuasive skills. It is important that you have good judgment. You are capable of networking and bring a (inter)national network to this position.

What we offer
You’ll have the opportunity to work at a media organization where diversity and inclusion are key priorities, in a role where you’ll help shape our new genre policy.

We offer a full-time employment contract for 36 hours per week with a gross monthly salary ranging from €5,465 to €8,883 based on a 36-hour workweek. A company car is included with the position. We determine pay based on education, experience, and equal pay (m/f/x). The appointment to this position is for five years, with the possibility of renewal for another five years.

Interested?
NPO is being assisted in this process by the executive search firm Colourful People. For more information about the position, please contact Henna Seedorf, partner at Colourful People (06 24274368).
