Budget Advisory Team Coordinator

Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy / Directorate for Financial and Economic Affairs (FEZ)

Job Description

A job with political impact? As a Budget Advisory Coordinator, you’ll certainly have one. Major developments such as climate change, energy shortages, and the ongoing digital transformation have a direct impact on the budgets of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) in The Hague. And therefore, on your work as well. By translating budgetary information into a clear political and administrative narrative, you help the EZK ministers and members of the Executive Board make the right decisions.

Your team plays a central role in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy’s (EZK) budget cycle. Together with your team, you coordinate the budget process and advise the Executive Board and ministers on budget surpluses and shortfalls. Together, you also ensure compliance with budgetary rules. This ensures that taxpayer money is spent effectively and that political goals can be achieved.

As a coordinator, you ensure that all processes run according to schedule and guide your team members in their work. You make sure we meet key deadlines so that budget decisions can be made smoothly. Together with the team, you develop recommendations, overseeing their quality and bringing your experience and expertise to bear on the final advice.

Within the team, each advisor has their own policy area. Together, we develop a clear overview so that senior officials can make sound budgetary decisions. This can be challenging, because various policy objectives within the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) compete for scarce resources. For example, the Directorate-General for Climate and Energy sometimes has different priorities than the Directorate-General for Business and Innovation. The challenge for Budget Advisory is therefore to ensure sufficient financial resources for the implementation of EZK’s policy plans and to make optimal use of these resources.

In addition, your team coordinates responses to parliamentary questions and provides advice on the Ministry of Finance’s budget memoranda and letters. Your team’s expertise is also regularly called upon for issues affecting the entire Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, such as the establishment and structure of the Climate Fund, the preparation of policy briefs, participation in (policy) evaluations, or the design and implementation of new instruments such as the price cap.

Why is this position at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy so interesting? Our ministry is responsible for the entire Dutch economy. This means you’ll have an impact on all economic sectors and, consequently, on the functioning of the national economy. What also makes your work exciting is the network you’ll build. You’ll collaborate with advisors from the General Economic Policy Directorate (AEP, economic advice) and the Executive Council Bureau (BBR, political advice), maintain frequent contact with the Inspectorate of the State Finances, and occasionally participate in debates or consultations with the minister. In short: a challenging, impactful job where you can indulge your passion for politics.

Job Requirements

You operate at an academic level of work and thinking and have experience with finance and budgeting processes, preferably including public finance and the policy-making process. Based on your knowledge, expertise, and skills, you are the natural point of contact and discussion partner for the FEZ Management Team regarding management issues related to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) budget. You possess sharp analytical skills, offer creative solutions, and can articulate your views clearly and persuasively. You have a keen sense of social and administrative dynamics, collaborate effectively, and maintain strong relationships with your network even when faced with conflicting interests.

You understand the art of delegating at the right level, giving your employees room to grow and ensuring you get the most out of the Budget Advisory team. You work proactively, decisively, critically, and meticulously, so that the department can rely on your team’s advice and reports. You meet tight deadlines, and successes are celebrated. As a team player, you know how to keep a sense of humor at crucial moments.
