More about this organization
A group of people are sitting and standing in a room lit by pink lights during a literary performance or event.

We are SLAA: we bring literature to everyone in Amsterdam. We do this through online and offline programs such as podcasts, open mics, and a wide variety of live performances in Amsterdam’s many vibrant neighborhoods. We are also the home of Amsterdam’s City Poet.

As a foundation, we receive ongoing funding from the AFK; the new funding period begins in 2025.

Due to the expiration of board terms, we are looking for new board members! Do you have an interest in literature and culture, and would you like to contribute to SLAA’s mission? We currently have openings for a treasurer and a general board member.

The Board sets policy, oversees the foundation’s activities, assists the Executive Board with both solicited and unsolicited advice, and meets an average of six times a year. Board members are appointed for a four-year term; this is an unpaid position. In return, you’ll gain access to a wealth of literary programs! We strive for a diverse team with knowledge of the literary field, the book trade, and the cultural sector, as well as expertise in finance, human resources, organizational management, or legal affairs, depending on the board portfolio.

We are currently looking for two dedicated board members who want to help us shape the future of SLAA. We are looking for board members who:

  • An affinity for and knowledge of the literary field in general, the city of Amsterdam, and SLAA’s objectives in particular
  • To promote and strengthen SLAA’s vision
  • Be able to manage at a strategic level while striking the right balance between offering critical input and working together constructively
  • Having a relevant network and an understanding of the various interests within and outside the organization
  • Have administrative experience

Specifically for the treasurer:

  • You will maintain contact with the director regarding SLAA’s financial progress and policies
  • You will report to the board on the financial statements, the budget, and risk management
  • You review the financial aspects of grant applications
  • You will be involved in presenting the annual financial statements and the annual plan (including the budget) to the board
  • You will oversee the financial planning, forecasting, and reporting prepared by the director
  • The current treasurer’s term ends in mid-2025, so there is still plenty of time for a smooth transition.

Time commitment

The board meets about six times a yearin Amsterdam (usually not in July and August). In the spring, we ask for extra effort in connection with the annual financial statements, and in the fall, in connection with the preparation of the annual budget.
