The Special Education & Expertise Centers Foundation (SSOE) in the Eindhoven/Helmond region is the leading center of expertise for education, outpatient counseling, and support for children and young people with disabilities aged 4 to 20. The foundation has an executive director and a board of trustees. We are seeking the following for SSOE:
a member of the Supervisory Board with specific expertise in finance and control
About SSOE
SSOE consists of three schools for special education (SO) and secondary special education (VSO), the External Services Department (ED), and the Work Transition Center (ATC). The three schools—the Antoon van Dijk School in Helmond, MBS Eindhoven, and Mytyl School Eindhoven—provide education to approximately 700 students. The ED supports students in mainstream education and advises, coaches, and guides IB staff, teachers, support staff, and parents on specific support needs and complex cases. At the ATC, students from the schools are gradually prepared for independence and self-reliance in the areas of living and working.
SSOE works closely with municipalities and relevant partners in education, healthcare, social services, and social assistance. But in everything they do for students, parents and guardians are their most important partners.
A year ago, SSOE set the course for the coming years: “Pushing boundaries together.” Together with its partners, SSOE aims to push boundaries in the educational landscape in line with societal developments. Education must become more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable so that more students can receive appropriate support within mainstream education. For more information, visit SSOE’s news page.
Board of Directors and Board of Supervisors
SSOE employs over 300 people. The CEO is responsible for managing SSOE and reports to the Board of Trustees on the policies implemented.
The Board of Trustees consists of five members with specific expertise in the areas of education and quality, welfare and care, operations and finance, governance, and HR and organizational development. The Board of Trustees places great value on diversity in expertise and backgrounds: both because of the diverse population and the complex issues SSOE faces, and to actively contribute to more inclusive education.
The board has three active committees: the Audit Committee, the Compensation Committee, and the Education & Quality Committee. The new member will serve as chair of the Audit Committee.
The Board of Trustees meets six times a year, conducts an annual self-evaluation, consults with the Parent-Teacher Association twice a year, and visits schools. Members are appointed for a four-year term, with the possibility of a one-time reappointment. The honorarium is commensurate with the organization’s objectives and the time commitment required to fulfill the role professionally.
Duties of the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees oversees the director’s performance of duties and exercise of authority and provides the director with advice and guidance. To this end, the Board applies a supervisory framework that describes how it carries out these tasks and the substantive principles it follows. In its work, the Board prioritizes the quality of education and staff. The supervisory framework, as well as the regulations, can be found on the
SSOE website.
Vision of the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees aims to ensure the foundation’s continuity based on its values and, within that framework, to safeguard SSOE’s identity and mission. In doing so, the following aspects are important to the Board:
- Trust as a foundation: critical friend
- More principle-based than rule-based
- Focus on culture and behavior
- Emphasis on learning and reflection
- The organization's social impact
- Personal responsibility for providing information
- A certain degree of accountability
- Implementing an active stakeholder policy

- An eye for new social developments;
- Daring to be independent, reflective, and vulnerable;
- Treating each other with respect, allowing room for different opinions, listening actively, and contributing positively;
- Acting with integrity and reliability, and being open and transparent.
For the position of Supervisory Board member with expertise in finance and control, the following specific competencies are important:
- You have a university-level background in finance or business administration, with a strong preference for a degree in RC or RA.
- You currently hold (or have recently held) a strategic or executive role in the field of finance and control.
- You have the knowledge and ability to understand and anticipate changes in the funding of (special) education.
- As the future chair of the Audit Committee, you will serve as a strong point of contact for the CEO and your colleagues on the Supervisory Board in the area of finance and control.
Supervisory experience is not required.
The Board of Trustees is particularly seeking candidates who will contribute to the board’s diversity. Therefore, male candidates—preferably those with an immigrant background—are warmly encouraged to apply.
Note: Employees of SSOE, as well as those who, directly or indirectly, provide goods, work, or services to SSOE on a commercial or professional basis, are not eligible for appointment to the Supervisory Board. Furthermore, a member of the Supervisory Board may not simultaneously serve as a director at an educational organization within the special education sector, nor in any educational sector other than special education, unless it concerns a different catchment area.
