About Mediacollege Amsterdam

We teach guts. That is the core message of Mediacollege Amsterdam (MA). For 100 years, Mediacollege Amsterdam and its predecessors have been a place where students are prepared for a career in the media industry or for further education. Mediacollege Amsterdam has consistently adapted to the changing demands of the industry. From a traditional graphic design school, Mediacollege Amsterdam has evolved into a comprehensive media vocational school offering both technical and creative programs. Stichting Media Amsterdam (Mediacollege Amsterdam) is one of the most comprehensive VMBO and MBO vocational schools for the media industry. Mediacollege Amsterdam offers virtually all MBO programs focused on the sector. This involves just under 3,000 students. The VMBO (approximately 300 students) offers the basic vocational, advanced vocational, and mixed tracks within the Media, Design, and ICT (MVI) profile. The VMBO program thus provides a smooth transition to MBO. In addition, Grafisch Media Instituut Holding B.V., affiliated with Mediacollege Amsterdam and operating under the name GMI Designschool, offers vocational courses and training programs on a commercial basis, for both individual students and companies. Mediacollege Amsterdam collaborates with GMI on lifelong development for the media industry. Mediacollege Amsterdam is a vocational school that operates on a supra-regional basis. Its service area is the Northwest Netherlands.

Due to the departure of one of the members of the Supervisory Board, we are seeking a new Supervisory Board member for Mediacollege Amsterdam who has experience with housing issues and a vision for the role of housing in a learning environment.

About the Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board exercises comprehensive and independent oversight of Mediacollege Amsterdam, thereby fulfilling its role as supervisor and as the employer of the Executive Board. In addition, the Supervisory Board advises the Executive Board and serves as a sounding board and sparring partner for the Executive Board, as well as an ambassador for MA. This is done with an appropriate, statutorily defined understanding of the roles between the supervisory body and the management, and a vision of effective oversight. In carrying out these tasks, the Supervisory Board pays attention to both soft controls (values, standards, and social responsibility) and hard controls (including strategic policy and laws and regulations/the Sector Code for Good Governance in Vocational Education). The supervisory role focuses, among other things, on (the implementation of) the strategic policy plan, the quality of governance, the integrity of finances and operations, the quality of education, positioning, and internal risk management. In addition to formal board meetings, the Supervisory Board has four committees: an audit committee, a compensation committee, an education committee, and a housing committee (to be established). The new member is the intended chair of the housing committee.

Mediacollege Amsterdam aims to distinguish itself by providing facilities that foster an educational environment. An educational environment where you can feel the dynamism of the media world. An educational environment that inspires and challenges students. Creating such an educational environment is one of the key priorities in the strategic agenda. The renovation of one of the campuses is intended to facilitate this educational environment. In addition, new construction and area development in Haven-stad require a robust housing vision.

The Supervisory Board currently consists of four members, including the chair. The Supervisory Board meets at least six times a year and requires an average time commitment of two half-days per month for meetings, committee work, thematic meetings, and official engagements. The atmosphere and manner of interaction are open and professional; the Board strives to form a team in which everyone’s strengths are utilized and respected. Transparency, self-reflection, and collegiality are key objectives in this regard. The appointment is for a four-year term with the possibility of reappointment for the same period. Supervisory Board members receive compensation in accordance with the WNT, which amounts to 14,184 euros per year for members. The Works Council is actively involved in the appointment of this specific member.

In addition to specific qualifications, we expect the new member to meet the general profile for members of the Supervisory Board, as outlined below.

Who are we looking for?

General Profile

  • Curious about and up to date on developments in education, particularly in vocational education (MBO) and preparatory vocational education (VMBO)—without any interests in (partner) organizations that could lead to a conflict of interest.
  • Focused on collaboration and open (personal) relationships.
  • A sense of humor and the ability to keep things in perspective.
  • Confident, professional but not overly formal, with a knack for communication.
  • The right balance between involvement and detachment.
  • Integrity, a sense of responsibility, and an independent mindset.
  • Outward-looking, with a passion for education, youth, media, and/or the creative industries.

For this specific new position, we are looking for candidates with:

  • Experience with housing projects and a vision of the role of housing in creating an educational environment.

  • An active network of government officials (in politics and education) in Amsterdam and the surrounding area.
  • Preferably, financial and business management knowledge of similar organizations.

Mediacollege Amsterdam views the diversity of our society as an asset and strives to ensure that its composition is as diverse as Dutch society itself.
