Make a difference for children in Nijmegen and the surrounding area

At KION, everything revolves around early childhood development. We provide children ages 0 to 13 with a safe, challenging, and inspiring environment so they can grow into self-confident and engaged young people through play. As a social childcare organization, we reinvest all of our revenue into the quality of our care.

We do this with 1,500 dedicated employees at over 180 locations in Nijmegen and surrounding municipalities, guided by our core values: together, curious, play. Our 2024–2028 business plan focuses on delivering recognizable KION quality at all locations, strengthening equal opportunity, sustainability, and inclusion, and securing a strong position in a competitive market.

Why this job opening?

We are looking for a new member who is well-versed in both social and financial issues and who can contribute to KION’s future through strategic oversight.

The Supervisory Board

KION’s Supervisory Board consists of five members. The Supervisory Board oversees the policies of the Executive Board and the general affairs of the organization. In addition, the Supervisory Board acts as the employer of the CEO and serves as a sounding board for strategic issues. The board has three committees: Remuneration, Finance (Audit Committee), and Quality. Within the SB, we work collaboratively in an open, reflective atmosphere. We always seek to build connections, both within the board and with our stakeholders. We adhere to the Childcare Governance Code and place great value on integrity, independence, and social responsibility. We place great importance on team development.

The assignment

The child care sector is undergoing significant changes. Major changes are on the horizon for the sector in the coming years:

  • Intense competition and market position: KION operates in a competitive market and aims to maintain and strengthen its position and recognized quality.
  • Financial resilience: strategic decisions must ensure continuity, even in the face of changing legislation or funding models.
  • Potential free childcare: this could lead to greater accessibility and an increase in demand, which would put pressure on operations, staffing, and facility issues.
  • Closer collaboration with the education sector: offers opportunities to improve educational quality, while ensuring that the expertise of the child care sector is effectively leveraged.
  • The increase in the number of children with special needs calls for additional expertise, collaboration with healthcare professionals, and robust quality assurance.

The new member will assist the Supervisory Board and the Executive Board in maintaining their strategic course, ensuring financial stability, and enhancing social value.

Who are we looking for?

You have a background in the public sector and combine that with strong financial expertise. This includes experience as a CFO, controller, or in a similar senior financial role, preferably with experience in management or oversight.

In addition:

  • An affinity for social organizations and the public value of child care
  • Strategic insight and a keen eye for risks and opportunities
  • Experience with financial oversight and the review of budgets, financial statements, and investment proposals
  • Ability to analyze critically, ask probing questions, and make connections
  • Social responsibility and integrity
  • Plenty of time to dedicate to this role
  • A local or regional connection to Nijmegen and the surrounding area is a definite plus

Personal profile

  • Curious, with a bird's-eye view
  • Independent in judgment, unifying in style
  • Business-savvy and socially driven
  • Willing to invest time in meetings, work visits, training, and self-assessment

Our offerings

A meaningful supervisory role at a strong, socially responsible organization that is deeply rooted in the community. You will work alongside a diverse and dedicated team of supervisors, with opportunities to contribute your own ideas and influence strategic decisions. This is a paid position.
