More about this organization
A conductor leads the orchestra during a performance in a large concert hall with an audience in the background.

The North Netherlands Orchestra (NNO) is the leading symphony orchestra of the three northern provinces. With over 150 years of history and a broad, innovative program, we are able to reach a large and diverse audience. From our home base in Groningen, we present more than a hundred concerts each year in the provinces of Drenthe, Fryslân, and Groningen, as well as beyond.

Our mission: to open up new horizons for everyone in the North by presenting live music that moves and inspires. The NNO is a vital catalyst for the region’s cultural ecosystem—an orchestra that effortlessly bridges tradition and innovation. With a rich program—ranging from “classical” to groundbreaking crossover concerts, music education projects, and research in the field of Arts & Technology—we reach audiences of all ages in collaboration with many regional and national partners.

We are seeking two new members for the Supervisory Board (the Board) who are willing to use their knowledge, experience, and professional network to help shape the future of the NNO alongside us. These vacancies have arisen due to the expiration of the second term of the two departing members.

What will you be doing?

The Board oversees the foundation’s policies, acts as the director’s employer, and serves as a sounding board and advisor to the director. In doing so, the Board follows the principles of the Cultural Governance Code, the Fair Practice Code, and the Diversity & Inclusion Code as guidelines. The Board meets four times a year and more frequently if necessary.

Who are we looking for?

We aim to establish a Board that represents a balanced cross-section of the three northern provinces and consists of supervisors with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. We particularly welcome candidates from Drenthe.

In addition, you identify with one or more of the following profiles:

  • Legal background and/or extensive administrative experience;
  • A broad network (political, administrative, business, etc.) that you are willing to actively engage for the benefit of the NNO;
  • An appreciation for art and culture, and for symphonic music in particular;
  • Experience or an interest in cultural funding;
  • A background in marketing and communications and/or digital technology;
  • An understanding of an orchestra’s role in a changing society;
  • The role of a strong sounding board for the director.

Candidates with a background in finance or law may be asked to serve on the Board’s audit committee.

What do you bring to the table?

As a member of the Board, you possess the following qualities:

  • An affinity with the NNO’s mission and role;
  • General administrative skills and experience;
  • Independent judgment – you can examine issues from multiple perspectives and carefully weigh the various interests;
  • Strategic insight – you contribute to long-term planning and help ensure the orchestra’s future viability;
  • Administrative sensitivity – you recognize dynamics and switch between engagement and administrative detachment;
  • The ability to assist the director by offering advice and serving as a sounding board;
  • Team-oriented – you contribute to an open, collegial, and constructive atmosphere within the Council;
  • Integrity and a sense of responsibility – you act in accordance with the values and social role of a cultural organization;
  • An understanding of the demands that quality, efficiency, and continuity place on a professional organization;
  • Sufficient availability for meetings and involvement with the NNO.

Reimbursement

The position is unpaid.
