We are looking for a new member to join the Supervisory Board of the Culture Fund. Are you a strategic thinker with a keen sense of the spirit of the times and a sharp eye for innovation? Do you have a strong affinity for culture and nature, and would you like to contribute to strengthening them in this part-time role? If so, we are looking for youto join the Supervisory Board of the Culture Fund.

About the Culture Fund

The Cultuurfondsis an organization that has been investing in the full spectrum of culture and nature since 1946, thereby fostering social cohesion. Through our support for thousands of initiatives throughout the Netherlands, the fund enables cultural creators—from associations to individual artists—to realize their ambitions. Our organization stands for accessibility, innovation, and reliability.

With a clear vision:

  • The world is a better place with culture.
  • Culture touches the soul, broadens your horizons, and sparks creativity.
  • Culture brings people together.

With support from organizations such as the VriendenLoterij and the Nederlandse Loterij, as well as donors, contributors, and partners, the Cultuurfonds works daily with a team of dedicated professionals—in collaboration with provincial offices, external experts, and juries—to build a better future for culture and nature. The Supervisory Board plays a crucial role in this effort, overseeing the organization’s strategic direction and social impact.

About the Supervisory Board

The Culture Fund is governed according to the Supervisory Board model. Day-to-day management is handled by the director, Cathelijne Broers, who bears ultimate responsibility for all of the Culture Fund’s activities and oversees its daily operations. The Supervisory Board oversees the Fund’s policies and its financial and operational affairs. Approval from the Supervisory Board is required to establish the main lines of policy and its financing; the Supervisory Board also monitors general operations and supports the director as a sounding board and employer. The members of the Supervisory Board come from private organizations, the business community, and the government. The Supervisory Board is advised on financial policy by the Financial Audit and Investment Committee. This committee reviews the annual financial statements, the activity budget, and the cost budget. The Supervisory Board consists of 5 to 7 members and meets with the director approximately five times a year, as well as once in a closed session for self-evaluation.

Due to the expiration of one of the members’ term of office on January 1, 2025, we are seeking a new member for the Supervisory Board.

Who are we looking for?

For this role specifically, we are therefore looking for an independent, out-of-the-box thinker with experience in engaging these innovative cultural creators and contributors, including an understanding of what this requires of an organization like the Cultuurfonds. With your sharp insights, fresh ideas, and authentic personality, you will ensure that the Cultuurfonds continues to innovate and stay ahead of the curve.

In addition, you have or are:

  • A strong commitment to social issues: You have an understanding of social trends and an affinity for culture and nature.
  • Strategic thinking: You have extensive experience in developing strategies and are able to analyze complex issues.
  • Innovative: You’re not afraid to think outside the box and are willing to challenge existing structures and ideas.
  • Role consistency: An appropriate understanding of one’s role, meaning a good balance between involvement and administrative detachment.
  • Authentic leadership: Social awareness, an independent mindset, and a sense of responsibility for the bigger picture.
  • Connection: You understand the power of diversity and are committed to inclusion.

What will you be doing?

As a member of the Supervisory Board, you play a key role in overseeing the Cultural Fund’s strategic policy and serve as a sounding board for the Executive Director. You bring a fresh and critical perspective, constructively scrutinizing the Fund’s direction without losing sight of your role as a supervisor. Together, you will work on making innovative choices that contribute to our mission. As the Cultuurfonds, we aim to be visible and accessible to cultural creators and funders who explore new directions in culture and nature, break through traditional boundaries and traditions, and dare to experiment with new forms.

Open atmosphere

This position is unpaid, but as a member of the Supervisory Board, you will make a valuable contribution to an organization that plays a significant role in society, at the intersection of culture and nature. You will join a team of dedicated supervisors where there is room for self-reflection, transparency, and discussion in an open, respectful atmosphere. The appointment is for 4 years, with the possibility of extension for another 4 years.

Leisure activities

The Supervisory Board meets approximately five times a year. The meetings are organized by the Cultural Fund, last about two hours, and are typically held in the late afternoon over a light meal. In addition, there are occasional thematic meetings, and members’ attendance is appreciated at openings and other special events.
