A circular museum hall with an ornate dome, classical columns, wooden display cases, and decorative mosaic flooring at Teylers Museum.

Teylers Museum is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable member for its board of trustees to oversee the finance portfolio. In this role, you will help ensure the financial health and long-term sustainability of the Netherlands’ oldest museum.

About Teylers Museum

Teylers Museum was founded in 1784 and is still housed in its original building. At the museum, you can marvel at art and science. It houses a unique collection of fossils, minerals, books, coins, medals, scientific instruments, paintings, and drawings of international significance. The history of the museum itself is also on display in the historic halls and Pieter Teyler’s House. We organize diverse and successful (international) exhibitions, ranging from Hockney’s Eye and The Great Illusion to Michelangelo’s Men.

About the role

As the supervisor responsible for the finance portfolio, you will oversee the museum’s financial policy, operational continuity, and risk management. You will serve as a strategic advisor to the executive board and actively contribute to strategic decision-making.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitor budgets, financial statements, and long-term projections.
  • Contributing ideas on financial (long-term) strategy.
  • Maintaining a balance between public funds and self-generated revenue.
  • Oversee risk management, internal control, and financial processes.
  • Maintain contact with the external auditor on behalf of the supervisory board.
  • Serve as the point of contact for financial matters within the council.

In addition, you will serve as vice chair:

  • You will serve as a sounding board for the chair and stand in for him or her as needed.
  • You will help set the strategic agenda and prepare for meetings.
  • You share responsibility for ensuring the proper functioning of the supervisory board.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with financial expertise and a keen sense of governance. You don’t have to meet every requirement; we also strongly encourage candidates who feel they match a significant portion of the profile to apply.

Ideally, you should have:

  • Experience with financial issues within complex organizations.
  • Knowledge of financial management and experience with (semi-)public financing.
  • Experience in an administrative or supervisory role.
  • Understanding of governance, risk management, and compliance.
  • An affinity for the cultural sector.

The pros are:

  • Familiarity with the Cultural Governance Code.
  • Experience with strategic financial decision-making.
  • Knowledge of real estate or large-scale projects.

What do you bring to the table as a person?

  • Strategic insight and analytical skills.
  • The ability to ask critical questions while respecting people’s roles.
  • Clear communication, even on complex financial topics.
  • Focus on collaboration.

We believe it is important that you contribute to a diverse and inclusive board of trustees and that you are open to different perspectives.

Leisure activities

  • About 80 hours per year (unpaid).
  • Four regular meetings per year.
  • Additional meetings will be held in response to significant developments.
  • Preparation and occasional consultation with management and the auditor.
  • Attendance at the museum’s major events.

We believe in a diverse and inclusive organization
Teylers Museum strives to have a board of trustees that reflects society. We believe that diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences contribute to better oversight and more informed decision-making.

We therefore strongly encourage people who are currently underrepresented in supervisory roles to respond.
