This is your chance to make a significant and meaningful contribution to society in the Haarlem region as a member of the Supervisory Board at one of the largest library organizations in the Netherlandsas a member of the Supervisory Board. We strive to represent all our target groups and key areas as effectively as possible (such as personal development, culture, collaboration with municipalities, IT, and finance). Given the current composition, you do not necessarily need to have supervisory experience. To enhance the diversity of the Supervisory Board, we welcome people from all cultural backgrounds and ages.
As a member of the Board of Trustees, you contribute to our mission to be an accessible place for inspiration, development, and connection for the residents of our municipalities, so that everyone can participate in society. You do this by helping to define our strategy, acting as the employer and sounding board for the executive director, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library from a distance. You do this together with five other Board members, each with their own area of expertise. The Board and the executive director meet five times a year to set the course and evaluate current policies.
The Supervisory Board operates in accordance with the Supervisory Board Regulations and the Cultural Governance Code. Members are appointed for a four-year term. This is an unpaid position. However, members do receive an expense allowance of approximately €1,250 per year.
More and more people are finding their way to the Zuid-Kennemerland Library. Of course, they come to borrow books, but also to read the newspaper in peace, study, participate in an activity, or simply meet up with others. The Library is changing, and our role in society is becoming increasingly important. The Library is the living room of the community where everyone is welcome and where you can “be yourself together.” It is a place where you can find answers to your questions in various ways and where you can develop yourself. You’ll find the Zuid-Kennemerland Library in Bennebroek, Bloemendaal, Haarlem, Heemstede, Hillegom, Vogelenzang, and Zandvoort, where we have a total of 10 library branches.
Our organization consists of 130 staff members and 200 volunteers. In recent years, we have welcomed nearly one million visitors annually and loaned out nearly two million items. Every year, we facilitate and organize hundreds of activities: courses in a wide variety of fields, performances, Dutch language classes, school visits, book presentations, book clubs, read-aloud sessions, and, more recently, hip-hop events and celebrations of the Berber New Year.
Visit www.bibliotheekzuidkennemerland.nl for more information about the organization. Under the“About Our Library”tab, you’ll find our strategic plan, among other things. You can read our 2023 annual report at https://www.bibliotheekzuidkennemerland.nl/over-ons/jaarverslag.htm
